Contract: Ongoing/Non-ongoing; Full-time

Overview

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (the Reef Authority) is a Commonwealth non-corporate entity, and a statutory agency established by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act 1975 (Marine Park Act), reporting to the Minister for the Environment and Water. Our objective is the long-term protection, ecologically sustainable use, understanding and enjoyment of the Great Barrier Reef for all Australians and the international community through the care and development of the Marine Park.

Managing a reef roughly the size of Italy demands many skills and talents, so you don't have to be a marine biologist to contribute to our mission. From finance to marketing roles, we have a team almost as diverse as the ecosystem we protect. Our commitment and dedication to the Great Barrier Reef and the Australian public have a long-lasting impact, and we are looking for individuals who can bring their unique skills, experience, and knowledge to our high-performing and inclusive organisation.

We are seeking an investigator to manage investigation cases, including the preparation of briefs of evidence in relation to State and Commonwealth offences that relate to the protection of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The position will involve working as part of a multi-agency team, liaising with the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions and the Reef Authority's legal team regarding assigned cases.

About You

* You have an eye for detail and are experienced in the application of legislation and the use of legislative instruments in an investigative context.
* You have experience in environmental and/or maritime compliance.

Key Responsibilities

* Investigate and manage cases for offences that relate to the State and Commonwealth jurisdictions of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and Island National Parks.
* Prepare case recommendations to finalise matters in a manner that is consistent with established compliance strategies, investigative procedures and in the best interest of the protection of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
* Prepare and submit briefs of evidence to The Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions and State Litigation Teams and assist in managing the prosecutions as directed.
* Establish and maintain relationships with internal and partner agency staff that enables efficient and effective case work. This includes standing up joint agency investigative teams where there is cross jurisdictional interest.
* Be an independent problem-solver and research complex legislative issues to provide accurate advice and ensure investigations and enforcement actions are legally sound and defensible.
* Board recreational, commercial and shipping vessels to exercise powers and undertake investigative tasks.
