The Role
As the Production Manager – CNC Programming, you will lead day-to-day operations in a fast-paced CNC machining setting. This is an 80% desk-based role with a focus on production planning, programming, cost estimation, and people leadership, while still being close enough to the floor to make hands-on technical contributions when needed.
You will play a critical role in ensuring production runs efficiently, customer projects are delivered on time and to specification and ensuring your team is supported to achieve their best.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Operations
- Lead and coordinate daily production schedules to achieve customer deadlines and quality standards
- Manage workflow across multiple CNC machines, ensuring optimal utilisation of labour, materials, and tooling
- Supervise and mentor a small but skilled team of CNC operators and production staff
- Maintain strong communication between production, engineering, sales, and logistics
CNC Programming & Technical Work
- Program, set, and (as required) operate CNC milling machines and CNC lathes (3-axis)
- Optimise CNC programs to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and ensure precision
- Interpret engineering drawings and provide technical guidance to the team
- Oversee prototype runs, small-to-medium batch jobs, and one-off complex components
Production Planning & Administration
- Estimate, quote, and prepare accurate job costing for projects
- Track and manage machine utilisation, cycle times, and downtime
- Implement and oversee QA processes, documentation, and compliance standards
- Use ERP and CAD/CAM software to manage workflows and maintain accurate records
Continuous Improvement & Safety
- Champion lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives
- Identify opportunities to streamline processes and reduce costs without compromising quality
- Ensure safe work practices and maintain a clean, organised workshop environment
About You
We are looking for a proactive leader with a strong background in CNC machining and programming, combined with proven success in managing production teams.
Your skills & experience should include:
- Trade or technical qualifications in machining, programming, or mechanical engineering
- 5+ years’ leadership experience in CNC/fabrication/manufacturing environments
- Strong CNC programming and operating experience (lathe & mill, 3-axis)
- Experience with FANUC controls and/or machining engineering plastics (highly regarded)
- High proficiency in reading and interpreting engineering drawings
- Solid understanding of job costing, ERP systems, and CAD software
- Demonstrated ability to train, mentor, and motivate a production team
- Strong commercial awareness, accountability, and attention to detail
- Full Australian working rights
