Principal Electrical and Instrumentation Engineer
Location: Melbourne, Vic
We are seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer to join our multidisciplinary team, providing strategic leadership and technical excellence in the design and delivery of complex electrical, instrumentation, and control (EI&C) systems across major infrastructure and industrial projects.
As a key technical authority, you will oversee the full lifecycle of engineering design packages—from concept through detailed design and into construction—ensuring best-in-class solutions that align with Australian regulations, hazardous area standards, and client objectives. You will drive innovation, mentor engineering teams, and act as a senior point of contact for internal and external stakeholders, playing a critical role in shaping project outcomes and improving engineering delivery frameworks.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide technical leadership and project oversight for the delivery of high-quality EI&C design solutions across multiple projects.
* Lead the preparation, review, and approval of engineering design documentation, ensuring alignment with industry standards, hazardous area compliance, and client specifications.
* Act as the Discipline Lead Engineer on major projects, coordinating multidisciplinary inputs and ensuring design integration.
* Mentor and guide senior and junior engineers, designers, and drafters, fostering continuous development and technical excellence across the team.
* Establish and refine engineering processes, standards, and templates, contributing to business-wide improvement initiatives.
* Manage client relationships, participate in project planning and design reviews, and support business development activities through technical input and proposal development.
* Represent the company at HAZOPs, design reviews, and technical workshops with clients, regulatory bodies, and third-party stakeholders.
* Support risk management and constructability assessments, ensuring practical and compliant design outcomes.
Skills & Qualifications
* Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
* 12+ years of experience in electrical engineering, ideally in a consultancy or EPCM environment, with significant exposure to the full project lifecycle.
* Demonstrated experience leading EI&C engineering design on large-scale industrial, infrastructure, or resources sector projects.
* Low and medium voltage systems
* PLC, SCADA, and DCS control systems
* Hazardous area classification and design (AS/NZS 60079)
* Electrical compliance and standards (AS/NZS 3000, 3008, etc.)
* Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
* Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) and RPEQ (highly regarded)
