Primary objective
Managing a small team of Land Management Technicians, ensure the delivery of land management programs for the Rum Jungle
rehabilitation Stage 3 project such as monitoring a range of metrics, undertaking revegetation, fire mitigation and weed
management projects, and preparing quality, evidence-based reports.
Context statement
The Northern Territory Government (NTG), in partnership with the Commonwealth, have been developing a leading practice
rehabilitation strategy for the former Rum Jungle mine site since 2009. Stage 3 of the rehabilitation project will deliver the complete
construction and works program. The workplace is characterised by changing priorities, rapid turn-around times and requires
considerable resilience and flexibility.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Develop, implement, and manage the land management aspects of the project, ensuring an on-site presence to provide real
time information and oversight.
2. Ensure all work is undertaken in line with Health, Safety and Environment requirements and foster a strong culture of safety
within the team.
3. Plan and manage the delivery of a range of activities such as controlled burns, weed management including fencing and
maintaining the site boundary.
4. Develop an integrated revegetation plan, with input from key stakeholders to ensure success and a seamless result; manage
delivery of the plan, including seed collection and appropriate propagation and planting schedules.
5. Manage a small team of field technicians, providing support and direction to ensure project objectives are met.
6. Provide technical advice, reports, presentations, and recommendations to the Superintendents, and/or stakeholders.
7. Actively seek training, development and participation opportunities for Land Management Technicians and the broader
Traditional Owner group and support the team to deliver on these objectives.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Qualifications in land management, horticulture, conservation or related fields, or significant relevant experience.
2. Experience with relevant legislation including the Environmental Protection Act (NT) 2019 and other relevant legislation or ability
to gain.
3. Demonstrated experience with contemporary land management and remediation models, including planning and delivering
rehabilitation works in disturbed landscapes, with an understanding of working safely and effectively in active construction
environments. Experience in project and risk management in a health, safety, and land management context.
1. Sound knowledge of the local flora and fauna or ability to gain.
2. Strong team and relationship management skills, particularly in developing and coaching towards transferable skill goals or
ability to gain.
6. A sound knowledge of the principles of equity and diversity, occupational health and safety, and records management.
7. Extensive cross-cultural awareness, understanding and knowledge, including a comprehensive understanding of cultural
sensitivities and needs in the planning and delivery of Aboriginal community projects.
