Overview
Fremantle Steel Group is a founder-led, family-owned Western Australian business with deep capability in structural and mechanical steel fabrication servicing clients across mining, oil & gas, infrastructure and commercial sectors. Bringing together Fremantle Steel Fabrication, Park Engineers and Interstate Crane and Transport Hire, the Group offers end-to-end delivery, from fabrication and modular construction through to transport, craneage and site erection.
With strong credentials, scale and a reputation built over decades, the business is now at a pivotal point. Government infrastructure investment, defence procurement and sovereign supply chain policy settings are creating a time limited opportunity for capable, locally owned fabricators. To capitalise on this opportunity and support this next phase of growth, Fremantle Steel Group has expanded the Group Business Development Manager role.
The Opportunity
This is a genuine business building role. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, you will be responsible for originating, developing and converting new business opportunities across infrastructure, defence and government-aligned markets, while also strengthening existing client relationships.
You will operate as a senior external representative of the Group, working closely with the Executive Leadership Team to shape and execute the commercial growth strategy. This is not a role managing an inherited pipeline; success will come from your ability to identify opportunities, navigate complex procurement environments and convert relationships into long term contracts.
Key Responsibilities
* Build and convert a structured pipeline of opportunities across infrastructure, defence, renewables, mining and commercial construction, with particular focus on WA Government capital works and Commonwealth defence programs.
* Develop and maintain senior relationships with Tier 1 and Tier 2 contractors, government procurement agencies and defence primes.
* Lead or support bids, tenders and unsolicited proposals, ensuring commercial discipline and competitive positioning.
* Interpret market intelligence across state infrastructure programs, forward works schedules and defence pipelines to identify emerging opportunities.
* Represent Fremantle Steel Group at industry forums, conferences and key networks.
* Work closely with estimating, operations and delivery teams to ensure opportunities are feasible and well transitioned into execution.
About You
You are a commercially astute, senior business development professional with a proven ability to win work in complex, project‐based environments. You understand how fabrication, engineering and construction businesses operate and you are comfortable carrying direct commercial accountability.
Experience navigating WA Government procurement frameworks, local content requirements or defence industry participation programs will be highly regarded.
Personally, you are a self‐starter, resilient, credible and comfortable operating in a lean, founder‐led environment. You bring integrity, persistence and the confidence to engage at senior levels across government and industry.
