Primary objective
Lead the provision of strategic and operational advice and support to schools, implementation, development and evaluation of
school operational policy, and responses to enquiries relating to school matters.
Context statement
School Operations provide operational advice and services to government schools, tailored to their needs, and focused on
supporting their improvement agenda. School Operations ensures the implementation of NT and Commonwealth Government
policies and department strategic priorities in NT Government schools. The position works within a small collaborative team
based in Darwin that supports all regions and contributes to the priorities and strategic direction of the Department of Education
and Training across the NT.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide strategic advice on school operational issues and play a lead role in the development, implementation and evaluation
of policy initiatives impacting on education outcomes for students throughout the Northern Territory.
2. Initiate and undertake research and prepare high level, comprehensive briefings, and reports on a range of issues relevant to
schools’ operations.
3. Ensure effective responses to issues raised by the community in relation to schools and resolve complex issues as appropriate.
4. Develop and maintain effective collaborative partnerships and liaise and negotiate with other agencies and community
organisations over a broad range of educational policy issues.
5. Lead multi-faceted project work and identify areas of opportunity for the system, regions, and schools to improve
organisational performance and meet strategic plan priorities.
6. Other duties as delegated by line management.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. High-level strategic, conceptual, and analytical skills including the ability to interpret and manage the political, social, and
organisational environment as it relates to school education.
2. Demonstrated high-level project management and policy development experience including ability to investigate, manage and
report on complex issues, evaluate associated benefits, and recommend evidence-based strategies.
3. Demonstrated well-developed interpersonal, oral, and written communication, negotiation, and collaboration skills, including
successful experience working in a culturally responsive way to lead teams, develop networks and illicit, listen and respond to
feedback from a diverse range of stakeholders.
4. Extensive experience in preparing high level reports, discussion papers, and correspondence.
5. Proven ability to deliver effective outcomes within tight deadlines, with high standards and attention to detail.
6. Contemporary knowledge of relevant legislation, policies and procedures and the business priorities of schools.
Desirable
1. Tertiary qualifications in education, public policy or administration, business or similar.
