Overview
The Tasmanian Health Service is seeking interest for a 2026 Geriatric Medicine Registrar at the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH). This position is suitable for Basic Physician trainees, GP Registrars, or as a non‑core term for Advanced Trainees in Rehabilitation or Emergency Medicine and is distinct from the Advanced Trainee in Geriatric Medicine role.
The aged care department has an establishment of nine full‑time equivalent registrar positions, including up to four advanced trainees in geriatrics and the remainder being registrars in Geriatric Medicine. These positions are supported by interns in acute geriatrics and five resident medical officers across sub‑acute services. The successful applicant will work with a team of junior doctors and consultants in a collegial, stable, and energetic environment of 17 geriatricians.
The department operates 112 inpatient beds – 60 acute, 42 sub‑acute (Geriatric Evaluation and Management), and 10 beds for patients with behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia requiring slow‑stream rehabilitation. An additional GEM at Home service is available. Specialists provide multiple inpatient services, consultative services, shared care orthogeriatrics model, outpatient clinics, regional outreach, education to undergraduates, allied health, nursing, postgraduates, and research. Rotation preferences will be discussed between the trainee and the Director of Clinical Teaching in Aged Care prior to commencement, considering educational objectives.
Salary
$134,930 – $189,005 per annum, in accordance with the Medical Practitioners Agreement 2022.

Fixed term, full time day work (part‑time hours may be considered), working 76 hours per fortnight plus 10 hours protected training time (pro rata) – effective 2 February 2026 until 1 February 2027 (2‑year appointment negotiable).

Duties
The Registrar is responsible for day‑to‑day management of private & public inpatients/outpatients and provides after‑hours emergency cover at the hospital.

* Current Working with Children Registration (where applicable).
