Help shape the future of one of Sydney's fastest growing and most diverse communities. This council is seeking an experienced Strategic Planner to join our team on a contract basis and contribute to a more beautiful, liveable, and sustainable city.
About the Role
As a Strategic Planner, you will play a key role in assessing major development and rezoning proposals, preparing planning policies, and providing specialist advice to Council and the Local Planning Panel.
You will:
* Assess both Council-initiated and applicant-initiated planning proposals (rezoning applications).
* Contribute to strategic planning and design policy, including site‑specific DCPs and Planning Agreements.
* Prepare reports for the Local Planning Panel and Council meetings.
* Manage consultants and collaborate with internal/external stakeholders.
* Support community engagement processes.
* Review planning certificates (Section 10.7) and undertake general planning correspondence.
* Contribute to improving planning proposal processes and urban planning systems.
Key Responsibilities
* Assess planning proposals and prepare recommendations for Council.
* Assist in preparing and negotiating Planning Agreements to deliver positive community outcomes.
* Develop, implement, and review land‑use strategies, planning instruments, LEPs, DCPs, and related policies.
* Prepare and progress Council‑initiated planning proposals.
* Manage project plans and consultant briefs across multiple disciplines.
* Provide submissions on State and Local Government policies and major infrastructure projects.
* Undertake evidence‑based analysis to support planning decisions.
* Participate in community consultation and engagement activities.
* Apply safe work practices and manage WHS risks.
About You
You will be a proactive, detail‑focused planner with a strong understanding of the NSW planning system and at least two years' experience in strategic planning.
Essential Experience & Skills
* Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.
* Experience preparing planning proposals, DCPs, Planning Agreements, and strategic planning reports.
* Strong understanding of planning processes (LEPs, DCPs, planning proposals, and the plan‑making framework).
* Proven ability to deliver planning projects on time and within budget.
* Ability to manage competing deadlines and prioritise effectively.
* Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
* Knowledge of planning legislation, State policies, and strategic planning instruments.
* Understanding of State and Local Government roles and the private sector's involvement in planning.
* Awareness of urban renewal issues, infrastructure planning, and community needs.
Desirable
* Prior experience working in Local Government (preferred but not essential).
