With multiple projects running concurrently across Queensland and New South Wales, we need a hands-on Accountant to manage project finances, cash flow, and compliance.
This is a full-time, permanent role reporting directly to the Financial Controller.
Key Responsibilities
You will be responsible for the full accounting function across our contracting operations, including:
* Assisting in formulating budgetary and accounting policies specific to project-based contracting.
* Preparing financial statements for presentation to directors, management, shareholders, and statutory bodies.
* Conducting financial investigations, preparing reports, undertaking audits, and advising on matters such as business acquisitions, mergers, capital financing, suspected fraud, insolvency, and taxation.
* Examining operating costs and organisations' income and expenditure – including job costing, subcontractor costs, and materials variance.
* Providing assurance about the accuracy of information contained in financial reports and their compliance with statutory requirements (including BAS, GST, and payroll tax).
* Providing financial and taxation advice on business structures, plans, and operations – including trust structures commonly used in contracting.
* Preparing taxation returns for individuals and organisations.
* Liaising with financial institutions and brokers to establish funds management arrangements – including project finance and equipment leasing.
* Introducing and maintaining accounting systems, and advising on the selection and application of computer-based accounting systems – including job management and project accounting software.
* Maintaining internal control systems – including subcontractor payment compliance and retention management.
* May appraise cash flow and financial risk of capital investment projects – including fleet and plant equipment purchases.
What you'll bring
Relevant Qualifications:
* Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Commerce, or Finance.
* CPA or CA qualification (or working towards) is strongly preferred.
Relevant Skills:
* Proficiency with Xero, MYOB, or Jonas Premier – experience with job costing or project accounting modules is essential.
* Strong Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, financial modelling).
* Understanding of construction contract accounting (progress claims, retentions, variations) is highly desirable.
* Knowledge of Australian tax, BAS, and superannuation obligations for subcontractors.
Relevant Experience:
* Minimum 2+ years of experience in a general accounting role.
* Experience in a contracting, construction, trades, or project-based environment is highly regarded but not essential if you are a fast learner.
* Experience preparing financial reports and tax returns for a small-to-medium business.
