Company
Onyx Precast Systems – Precast Concrete Manufacturer -
Wyong (Central Coast) & new purpose-built facility in Jilliby, NSW
The Big Picture
We're building the world's most advanced automated precast wall-panel production system – a complete turn-key factory-in-a-box that will be sold and deployed globally.
After 15 months of intense R&D (co-developed with our automation partner using ABB industrial robots, AGVs, custom tooling and AI-driven software), we've just secured VC funding to finish the commercial product and build a brand-new 3,500 m² facility designed around the automation.
And now we're bring the core automation expertise in-house.
Role Title
Senior Automation Engineer – Robotics & Mechatronics
(Direct report to the CEO)
What You'll Actually Do
* Take ownership of iterative design, optimisation and industrialisation of all robotic end-effectors and tooling.
* Integrate PLC-based subsystems into the broader architecture.
* Design and integrate the SCADA layer for monitoring, control and data acquisition across the entire plant.
* Co-design a 15-tonne automated vertical storage and lifting system with our structural/mechanical team and external fabricators.
* Integrate and commission the AGV fleet into the production flow.
* Value-engineer every aspect of the automation for reliability, cycle time, cost and serviceability.
* Work shoulder-to-shoulder with our third-party automation partner (who already knows the system inside-out) and the CEO (who writes the high-level software).
* Be the go-to technical authority as we scale from prototype → commercial product → multiple customer installations.
You'll love this role if you
* Get a genuine buzz from seeing robots do useful, hard things in the real world.
* Are happiest when you're in the workshop with a screwdriver one hour and CAD the next.
* Hate over-engineered solutions and obsess over simplicity, uptime and cost-per-panel.
* Thrive in a small, high-trust, high-delivery team where your opinion carries real weight.
Must-Have Experience
* 5+ years in automation/mechatronics/robotics engineering (ideally manufacturing or materials-handling environments).
* Proven track record designing, building and commissioning robotic end-effectors/tooling from concept to production.
* Hands-on PLC integration and commissioning experience.
* SCADA system design and integration experience.
* Value-engineering mindset – you naturally shave seconds and dollars without sacrificing quality.
* Comfortable owning the full lifecycle: requirements → design → fabrication → programming → commissioning → continuous improvement.
Nice-to-Have
* ABB RobotStudio / RAPID programming
* AGV integration
* Functional safety
The Person We're Looking For
* Adaptive – priorities can shift fast when we learn something new.
* Solution-focused, not problem-focused.
* Obsessed with building products that are genuinely great.
* Conscientious to your core – you hit deadlines because missing them hurts.
Location & Logistics
* Based between Wyong (current site) and the new Jilliby facility (~15 min drive).
* Occasional interstate/overseas travel for supplier visits and future customer installs.
* Full-time salaried role; equity conversation on the table for the right person.
If you've spent years making robots do clever, heavy, real-world work and you're ready to own an entire production system end-to-end, let's talk.
