About The Role
We're looking for a Lead Software Engineer to join and help guide our Financial Operations team – the group responsible for the systems powering Fat Zebra's settlements, billing, treasury, and core financial operations. These systems ensure secure, accurate, and scalable handling of high-volume financial transactions across payment rails, internal ledgers, and banking partners.
In this leadership role, you will set technical direction, mentor senior engineers, and drive execution across complex, distributed financial systems. You will partner closely with product, operations, support, and other engineering teams to ensure we deliver reliable and long-term scalable infrastructure that underpins merchant trust, accurate reconciliation, and timely settlement.
You'll be leading a small, high-calibre team that thrives on solving hard problems in distributed systems, data integrity, and financial correctness. Our tech stack is Ruby on Rails, with some React/TypeScript on the frontend. This team is primarily backend-focused, with an emphasis on designing reliable systems that operate at scale and with precision.
Reporting to Head of Infrastructure, some of your responsibilities will be:
* Foster a culture of ownership, curiosity, and continual improvement across system design, development practices, and documentation.
* Set and drive the technical direction for the Financial Operations domain, ensuring architectural decisions align with long-term business and system needs.
* Lead the delivery of major initiatives, ensuring high-quality outcomes from design, deployment to post-release iteration.
* Communicate complex technical concepts clearly and influence decision-making across the organisation.
* Own critical production systems and guide the team through diagnosing and resolving complex issues such as ledger discrepancies, state propagation challenges, and third-party integrations.
About You
You are a seasoned engineering leader who combines deep technical expertise with exceptional people and stakeholder skills.
Specifically, You Have
* Extensive experience leading engineering teams working on large-scale or highly complex distributed systems – ideally in payments, fintech, or other financial domains.
* Strong proficiency with Ruby on Rails or equivalent backend technologies.
* A track record of architecting systems that are robust, maintainable, and long-lived.
* Strong communication skills and the ability to bring clarity to ambiguous technical or product problems.
* Experience managing prioritisation across business needs, technical constraints, and team capacity.
* Deep curiosity, you seek to understand complex domains, data flows, and systems.
