Primary objective
Manage the planning and development processes for various projects in both urban and remote areas. This role requires a deep
understanding of urban planning principles, strong analytical skills, and the ability to navigate complex regulatory frameworks.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide high level professional advice and information to the Department, the Development Consent Authority (DCA). the
Northern Territory Planning Commission (NTPC), and the Minister for Lands, Planning and Environment (the Minister), relevant
Government agencies and the public on planning and development issues in the Northern Territory to ensure that land is
developed for the sustainable economic, environmental and social benefits.
1. Efficiently process a range of planning applications and prepare reports to the DCA, the NTPC and the Minister.
2. Facilitate consultation with all stakeholders on strategic planning projects and applications and lead negotiations to reach a
viable outcome, including exemptions, in compliance with the relevant Planning Scheme.
4. Undertake inspections of development sites, reporting on land capability and detailed planning issues, including investigations
of alleged breaches of statutory planning controls under the Planning Act 1999.
5. Respond to issues raised by stakeholders including the development of land use concepts and policy.
6. Stay informed about emerging trends and legislative changes in the field of planning and apply knowledge to innovate planning
processes and outcomes and engage in public education on work related topics.
7. Assist with the mentoring and development of junior planners and support staff.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. A degree or diploma related to Land Use Planning from an Australian tertiary institution, or equivalent; or admission, or eligibility
for admission, to full membership of the Planning Institute of Australia.
2. Demonstrated recent experience in dealing with a wide range of land use, land capability and development and/or strategic
planning issues, including high levels of competency in the assessment of planning applications.
3. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to facilitate meetings, present complex information, and build
consensus among diverse stakeholders.
4. Ability to research and draft quality technical reports and documentation, strong analytical research and problem-solving skills
with the ability to interpret and apply technical data and planning principles.
5. Demonstrated organisational skills and a proven ability to effectively manage workloads in order to meet tight deadlines.
6. Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and provide support to the team including other planning staff.
7. Ability to provide an effective service, a commitment to delivering a high-quality customer experience and well- developed
political and cross-cultural awareness skills.
8. Current Northern Territory Driver's License or ability to obtain.
Desirable
1. Demonstrated capacity to undertake assessment of complex development applications and make recommendations.
2. Demonstrated capacity to develop and present spatial land use concepts and associated policy.
