Where you will be working and what you'll be doing
Goulburn Base Hospital is a Level 4 Paediatric facility that admits children from Goulburn, Crookwell, Yass and Braidwood hospitals. The Consultant Paediatrician is responsible for the provision of high-quality, independent care to paediatric patients aged 0–16 years (occasionally up to 18 years in the case of chronic conditions) in both inpatient and outpatient settings. This role involves acute and outpatient care, neonatal resuscitation, and collaborative work with maternity, emergency, and regional services. Flexibility, clinical leadership, and the ability to adapt to local systems and protocols are essential.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Duties:
* Provide consultant-level care for paediatric inpatients, outpatients, and emergency presentations.
* Attend all high-risk and elective Caesarean sections and deliveries as required.
* Manage acute paediatric and neonatal emergencies, including initial stabilisation and coordination with NETS for transfer.
* Operate independently with minimal on-site support, including during after-hours periods.
On-call Responsibilities:
* Participate in a 24-hour on-call roster, with handover at 8:00 am.
* Provide continuous consultant-level coverage during on-call shifts, including overnight.
* Provide out-of-clinic prescriptions and triage new referrals
* Supervisor registrar and RMO outpatient clinics
Outpatient Clinics:
* Conduct general paediatric clinics, with a high proportion of children presenting with behavioural and developmental concerns.
Documentation & Systems:
* Complete all clinical documentation accurately and promptly using the hospital's electronic medical record (eMR) system.
* Complete discharge summaries for patients going home after hours.
Teamwork & Communication:
* Work collaboratively with other departments, including maternity, emergency, surgery and other health professionals.
* Liaise with external referrers, including GPs and regional hospitals, for referrals, consultations, and patient transfers.
Professional Standards & Compliance:
* Adapt to and comply with local hospital policies and procedures where available.
* Demonstrate current competency in neonatal resuscitation and Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS).
* Maintain registration and credentials in accordance with NSW Health and Medical Board requirements.
Selection Criteria
* Eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia as a Specialist General Paediatrician, and/or specialist international medical graduate pathways.
* Demonstrated recent clinical experience in General Paediatrics at the role delineation of the service, including demonstrated competency in neonatal resuscitation, stabilisation, and management of acute paediatric emergencies.
* Demonstrated recent clinical experience with child and adolescent medicine, including children with complex care requirements, and experience in assessment and management of behavioural and developmental conditions in an outpatient setting.
* Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and to provide clinical leadership within a regional hospital setting, including availability to participate in an on-call roster.
* Demonstrated effective clinical communication through the use of information technology and written, verbal and interpersonal skills, including timely clinical documentation, outpatient correspondence, and communication with patients, families, and colleagues.
* Demonstrated commitment to teaching, supervision of junior medical staff, clinical research, simulation, continuing professional development, and participation in quality improvement activities.
* Demonstrated understanding of clinical governance principles including the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards, and commitment to compliance with NSW Health policies and SNSWLHD procedures.
Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Specific Diseases
This is a Category 'A' position, please read and understand NSW Health policy directive PD2024_015. All new employees must agree to comply with the requirements outlined in this policy. OASV requirements also include proof of vaccination against influenza and is compulsory for NSW Staff that enter any Residential Aged Care Facility (RACF) or who work in NSW Health owned and operated RACFs.
