Overview
This is a level 5 role within SBS Australia with a base salary range of $109,890 – $129,820 plus super. The role is hybrid: 3 days in office, 2 days work from home. It is an Indigenous‐identified full‐time, ongoing opportunity and a genuine occupational requirement for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander applicants.
Reporting and Role Summary
Reporting to the Senior Commissioning Editor, the Commissioning Editor manages a slate of projects, overseeing the development, commissioning and delivery of high‐quality scripted and factual content for NITV. The focus is on First Nations storytelling, nurturing relationships with the independent production sector, industry partners, and internal teams. The role ensures all commissioned content upholds cultural protocols and aligns with NITV and SBS strategies.
Key Responsibilities
* Identify, assess, and develop engaging, award‐winning content with a platform‐agnostic mindset.
* Oversee project development, providing timely creative and editorial feedback on concepts, treatments, scripts, and other creative materials.
* Contribute to decision‐making processes and advise external stakeholders of outcomes.
* Participate in writer's rooms, workshops, and project meetings to support content development.
* Manage commissioning processes from pitch through to greenlight, production, delivery, and publicity/marketing.
Qualifications
* Minimum of 5 years relevant experience in production, a production company, funding agency, network, or streamer.
* Strong creative thinking, critical and analytical skills.
* Excellent communication skills.
* Demonstrated experience in commissioning scripted and/or factual content for broadcast and digital platforms.
* Deep understanding of First Nations storytelling, cultural protocols and engagement practices.
* Proven ability to manage productions, evaluate creative materials, oversee budgets and schedules, and guide content from pitch to delivery.
* Established relationships within the Australian screen industry, including independent producers, writers, directors, state and federal agencies, and funding bodies.
* Collaboration skills with cross‐functional teams (Marketing, Legal, Programming, Audience Insights, Business Affairs).
* Strong editorial judgement and understanding of SBS's Charter, Codes of Practice and compliance requirements.
* Capacity to support emerging talent and maintain a positive team environment.
