Your new company
This is an opportunity to join a leading national commercial law firm with a strong presence across Australia. With over 800 professionals nationally, the firm is known for its dynamic and collaborative culture, and its unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional value to clients. Following a recent strategic expansion of its government practice in Canberra, the firm fosters a professional yet friendly environment where openness, respect, and accountability are central to its success.
Your new role
The firm is seeking an experienced Special Counsel with at least eight years' post-admission experience to join its Dispute Resolution team in Canberra. You'll work closely with respected partners on a broad range of complex and high-profile matters. These include government-focused litigation, class actions, regulatory disputes, complex civil and commercial claims, merits and judicial review, as well as investigations, royal commissions, and parliamentary enquiries. You'll also provide strategic legal advice to government and commercial clients. This is a leadership role that offers genuine career progression and the chance to mentor junior lawyers within a high-performing and supportive team. The firm welcomes applications from candidates seeking part-time arrangements.
What you'll need to succeed
To be successful, you'll bring deep expertise in litigation and dispute resolution, ideally gained in private practice, the Australian Government Solicitor, or a Crown Solicitor's Office. You'll be confident working independently and collaboratively, with strong commercial awareness and a proactive mindset. Your ability to build effective client relationships and contribute to team development through mentoring will be highly valued. You must also be eligible to obtain a security clearance from the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency.
What you'll get in return In addition to working with a strong and established client base, you'll enjoy a range of benefits, including flexible working arrangements, generous parental leave, annual flu vaccinations and skin checks, study assistance, and access to a sophisticated employee assistance program. The firm also offers corporate discounts, regular social events, and opportunities to contribute to meaningful pro bono work.
