Overview

Consultant Community Paediatrician role at Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust. Closing date: 05 April 2026.

Join our Cambridgeshire Children's Services team to deliver high quality, compassionate care to children, young people and families across the county. We are seeking a committed Consultant Community Paediatrician to help shape and strengthen our thriving service. You will provide specialist assessment and management for children with neurodevelopmental conditions (including ADHD and autism), long term disabilities, complex health needs, and safeguarding concerns. You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams—therapists, nurses, psychologists, and education partners—to deliver collaborative, child-centred care. This is an opportunity to influence service development, contribute to quality improvement, and support the training and supervision of junior colleagues within a friendly and forward-thinking environment.


Main duties of the job

* Assessment and management of complex physical disability with knowledge of tonal management and complex care planning.
* Support for children in care across the region.
* Safeguarding: contribute to regional safeguarding rota providing medical assessment for children with non-acute safeguarding concerns.
* Support referral meetings – consultant-led.
* Support teaching and training of medical students, Community and Neurodisability trainees, educational and clinical supervision.
* Ongoing contribution to service development, evaluation and improvement as part of the role.
* Opportunity to develop interests in safeguarding, complex care management, mental health, fostering and adoption and Looked After Children (LAC). Provide expert advice to other agencies where needed; strong links with acute sector colleagues, CAMH, Education and Social care.
* Participate in relevant emergency preparedness processes for the team.

Job responsibilities

Job Purpose:

This is a 10 PA post with Cambridgeshire Community Services (CCS).

* Assessment and management of children with neurodevelopmental disorders including autism, ADHD and learning disability (individually or as part of a multi-disciplinary team).
* Provide healthcare to children up to 19 years of age in a local SEND school, including medical advice related to learning needs, multi-disciplinary assessment and management of children with complex physical disability, supporting transition plans and safeguarding support. This may include supporting advanced care plans and end-of-life support with other agencies.
* Support a pre-existing team to deliver community paediatric services for children in Cambridgeshire.
* Cover neurodevelopmental clinics for pre-school and school-aged children; provide clinical care for children with neurodisability and support the child protection rota for non-urgent child protection medicals.
* May cover children in care medicals with training offered.
* Post covers all of Cambridgeshire; service shared with Peterborough. Opportunities to develop areas of interest according to applicant's experience.
* CCS provides child health services in Cambridgeshire; part of Cambridge and Peterborough ICS. Includes non-urgent safeguarding rota.
* Strong MDT working; opportunities to develop special interests; bases include the Peacock Centre, Brookfields Hospital Cambridge; The Oaktree Centre Huntingdon; New Horse Fair Clinic Wisbech; Alan Conway Court Doddington Hospital; and the CDC in Addenbrooke’s Hospital.
* We are a team of 11 Consultants, 2 Specialist/Specialty doctors, 2 Psychologists (Band 8b and 7) and a Nurse (Band 7) with close links to Education, CAMH, Learning Disability, local acute sector, Cambridge University Hospital and NWAFT. GRID trainees and medical students are supported.
* We are committed to improving outcomes and exploring innovative strategies; research-active with opportunities for CPD and education of trainees.
* CCS was rated outstanding at the last CQC inspection and ranked 4th in NHS England’s national league table for non-acute trusts.


Communication

The post holder is expected to have excellent verbal and written communication skills. MDT work will involve collaboration with the following teams:

* Community team paediatricians, psychologists and community nurses
* Speech and Language Therapists, physiotherapy and occupational therapy
* Community nurses
* Educational colleagues, SEND, SENCOs, Educational Psychologists
* CAMH colleagues
* Acute paediatric colleagues
* Social services


People Management

* Maintaining own professional development via annual appraisal
* Teaching and supervision of Community Paediatrics to Paediatric Specialty Trainees and trainees from other allied health professions
* Support good medical practice through clinical supervision, education and training, reviews of safety and quality, team working and clinical leadership


Research & Development Activity

* Encouraged to undertake research as part of clinical practice and CPD with support from the CCS Research Team
* Regular internal CPD activities and multidisciplinary training with colleagues from other groups and external agencies
* Active Community Paediatric clinical network in the East of England; opportunities to conduct research with Cambridge University Hospitals, CAMH and other partners


Clinical and Practice Governance

* Maintain Good Medical Practice; contribute to patient safety, service improvement and training
* Work within the CCS clinical governance framework; participate in service improvement, quality assurance, clinical effectiveness and risk management
* Maintain GMC registration and revalidation; eligible for annual appraisal and job planning
* Comply with mandatory training, information governance, confidentiality, infection control, and risk management policies
* Participate in audits and service development; provide patients and families with information on standards to expect


Person Specification


Qualifications & Training

* GMC registered (Full)
* MBBS or equivalent
* MRCPCH or equivalent
* Valid intercollegiate safeguarding training at Level 3
* CCT in Paediatrics or within 6 months of obtaining CCT at interview; CESR (PMET B) applicants must have CCT at time of application
* Higher Medical Degree or distance learning course (desirable)


Management

* Evidence of service improvement
* Completed management course or experience in management


Skills & Knowledge

* Strong advocate of community-based children's services
* Good communication skills and written communication
* Able to prioritise and adapt to change


Teaching

* Evidence of teaching experience and peer support
* Experience in teaching postgraduate trainees and allied health professionals
* Publications, papers and presentations
