ABOUT ST MARY'S CATHEDRAL
St Mary's Cathedral, officially the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is located in Victoria Square, Perth. St Mary's Cathedral is the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Perth. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Perth and is administered by the Dean of the Cathedral.
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO DO
The Vocal Tutor provides essential assistance, fostering the vocal development and well-being of the Cathedral choir. The tutor will assist with rehearsal sessions for cantors and choir members, provide guidance and preparation for Cathedral services and associated events, and support the selection of the Cathedral's music repertoire with a demonstrated ability to conduct ensembles and sing for church services when required.
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Vocal Health of Cathedral Singers
* Assess vocal health issues
* Direct to necessary medical assistance if required
* Be the main point of call for any vocal health concerns, in association with the Master of Music
* Guide choristers through voice change and support healthy vocal development, direct to necessary medical assistance if required
Training and Development
* Provide individual lessons to choristers
* Design a warm-up and vocal technique programme to meet specific musical demands
* Prepare the choir for Cathedral services and music events
* Organise regular rehearsal sessions and prepare relevant materials
* Support the Master of Music and the Principal Organist with the selection of the musical repertoire
* Train and assess choristers for the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) Voice for Life program
* Utilise music notation software and Microsoft Office suite as required
Administrative and Operational Support
* Conduct ensembles and sing for church services, ensuring continued musical leadership during staff absence
* Manage records, attendance and feedback from rehearsal sessions or events as required
* Coordinate with the Master of Music to organise music lists and rehearsal schedules
* Liaise with internal and external reports to ensure coordination and delivery of the music schedule
* Strengthen engagement with prospective singers, including students and adults
* Ensure all work complies with policies, procedures, and safeguarding protocols

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Skills & Experience
Essential:
* Qualification in music, music education, vocal performance or vocal pedagogy (or equivalent professional experience)
* Ability to work with diverse skill levels (beginner to advanced)
* Proficient with Microsoft Office suite
* Strong organisational skills and dependable
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills
* National Police Clearance (NPC)
* Working with Children Check (WWC)
* WA Driver's Licence
Personal qualities:
* A willingness and capacity to support the Catholic ethos
* Commitment to nurturing the growth and development of choir members
