Looking for a meaningful way to use your considerable financial knowledge and acumen? The BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres is looking for an experienced, knowledgeable and dedicated person to fill our Director of Finance position. Join the leadership team of a thriving and growing Indigenous provincial non-profit where you will work with a management team and Board of Directors to ensure the financial health and sustainability of an organization with multiple funding streams, initiatives, and funding programs.


Job Summary

Located within the territory of WSÁNEĆ (Saanich), Lkwungen (Songhees) and Wyomilth (Esquimalt) peoples, the BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres (BCAAFC) is the umbrella association for the 25 Friendship Centres throughout the Province of British Columbia. The BCAAFC collaboratively works to promote and deliver accessible programs and services that target urban Indigenous peoples and that support their vision of health and wellness.

As a senior leader within BCAAFC, the Director of Finance will oversee the financial stewardship of the organization. This includes financial reporting, budgeting, grant management, compliance, payroll, and funder accountability. The successful candidate will bring both strategic insight and operational oversight, ensuring transparent and effective use of resources to advance our mission and values.


Duties Include

Strategic Financial Leadership

* Advise the Executive Director, General Manager, and Board on financial planning and sustainability.
* Lead the development and monitoring of short- and long-term financial strategies aligned with organizational priorities.
* Collaborate with team leads to ensure budgets and expenditures align with program deliverables and funding agreements.

Financial Management & Reporting

* Oversee all general ledger activities, payroll, accounts payable/receivable, and monthly reconciliations.
* Generate timely and accurate internal financial statements, funder reports, and financial updates for senior leadership and the Board.
* Lead the development and management of the annual organizational budget, including program-specific budgets and forecasting.

Grant and Funding Administration

* Track and report on in flow-through funds annually to ensure compliance with grant terms.
* Support departments in developing accurate financial reports and projections for funding proposals and funder reports.
* Ensures the finance department maintains and file all master funding agreements and amendments, ensuring timely submissions and audits

Treasury Management

* Oversee cash management activities including cash forecasting, receipts and disbursements.
* Maintain current knowledge of capital markets.
* Recommend cash investment activities that support safety of capital, organizational liquidity and return.

Compliance & Risk Management

* Ensure compliance with Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations (ASNPO), CRA guidelines, and GAAP.
* Manage preparation for annual audits, acting as the key liaison with external auditors.
* Ensure sound internal controls, financial policies, and procedures to mitigate risk and enhance accountability.
* Conducts annual review of organizational financial policies to ensure that they are current and adhered to
* Ensures that documentation related to signing authority is maintained and updated annually

Team Leadership & Development

* Supervise the finance team with a focus on mentorship, development, and team cohesion.
* Creates training opportunities to ensure that staff have the knowledge and training to follow financial processes within the organization
* Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and culturally safe work environment that upholds the values of the BCAAFC.

Operational Oversight

* Ensures the finance department has systems in place to process biweekly payroll processing, reconcile visa statements, and ensure timely vendor payments.
* Manage organizational insurance policies, including workers compensation, general liability, and Director and Officers.
* Maintain financial systems, digital record-keeping, contract binders
* Acts as the agent with organizational financial institutions, Canada Revenue Agency, and other agencies as required


Skills and Abilities

* Proven ability to lead audits, track and report on complex grants, and advise on strategic financial decisions.
* Strong communication, leadership, and team collaboration skills.
* Proven experience working with multiple revenue streams, funders, and reporting requirements
* Demonstrated ability to communicate technical finance information to a non-finance audience
* Experience working with or in Indigenous organizations is a significant asset.
* Proven ability to adapt and improve organizational financial systems in a growth oriented organization
* Experience working in a non-profit environment is an asset
* Experience managing granting programs


Qualifications

* CPA designation required; MBA or equivalent is an asset.
* Minimum 7+ years of progressive finance and accounting experience, including 3 years in a senior leadership role.
* Demonstrated knowledge of non-profit accounting, fund accounting, and financial compliance.
* Experience with Sage accounting software, payroll systems, and Microsoft Office Suite.


Employment Conditions

* The place of work is 551 Chatham Street, Victoria BC; a hybrid model may be considered.
* BCAAFC is an accessible space that includes ground-floor workspaces, an elevator, and accessible workstations.
* The selected individual must have a stable internet connection and telephone/cell phone to work from home. IT services and laptops will be supplied.
* The workweek is 35 hours; some overtime and travel are required for this position.
* Must be able to provide a clear, current criminal record check.


The compensation package includes…

* Three weeks paid vacation (plus additional time off during office closure at the end of December).
* Employee health benefits plan.
* $90,000-$110,000.00 starting salary based on experience.
* RRSP matching of up to 8% of annual salary to a max of $8,000 per year.
* Monthly employee wellness fund.
