At Jacobs, we're challenging today to reinvent tomorrow by solving the world's most critical problems for thriving cities, resilient environments, mission-critical outcomes, operational advancement, scientific discovery and cutting-edge manufacturing, turning abstract ideas into realities that transform the world for good.
Your impact
Jacobs is building one of the leading Earthing & Electromagnetic (EMT) capabilities in the region and we are looking for a dynamic
Senior or Associate Engineer to join our Earthing and EMT team, who wants to be at the forefront of high-voltage transient analysis.
This is not a generic power systems role. This is for engineers who want to work on real electromagnetic transient problems, the kind that directly influence equipment specification, system security, insulation design, and switching performance on major infrastructure and energy transition projects.
If you thrive on solving complex, high-frequency, non-linear system behaviours—this is where you do it.
Why this role stands out
Work on true EMT problems, not just steady-state modelling.
Influence critical design decisions (breaker duties, insulation levels, switching strategies).
Be part of a specialist, high-performing team with strong technical leadership.
Gain exposure to major Australian and global energy infrastructure projects.
Help shape the next generation of EMT capability, including digital and AI-supported workflows.
What You Will Do
You will take a hands-on, technically leading role across complex EMT and high-voltage studies
Core EMT focus -
You will deliver advanced studies including
TRV / RRRV analysis (breaker duty and compliance-critical work)
Transformer energisation and inrush phenomena
Insulation coordination and overvoltage assessment
Ferroresonance identification, modelling, and mitigation
Build, validate, and interpret detailed transient models using PSCAD / EMTP-type tools
Complementary capability (highly valued) -
Contribute to earthing and electromagnetic studies, including
EPR, step/touch safety, and earthing design
Lightning and EMI/EMF performance
Work across broader power system interactions where required
Consulting & leadership -
Deliver high-quality technical outputs that clients rely on for critical decisions.
Translate complex transient behaviour into clear, practical engineering insights.
Support and grow client relationships through technical credibility.
Mentor engineers and actively lift team capability.
Here's what you'll need
This role is for engineers who want to go deeper technically.
You Are Likely Someone Who -
Gets genuinely interested in how systems behave during transients—not just whether they "pass".
Is comfortable working with waveforms, switching events, and non-linear behaviour.
Wants to move beyond "running studies" into understanding and influencing outcomes.
Enjoys combining strong fundamentals with modern tools and smarter workflows.
What You'll Bring -
Degree in Electrical Engineering
Strong grounding in
Electromagnetics and transient behaviour
High-voltage engineering and insulation phenomena
Power system fundamentals and system interactions
Essential / Highly Regarded Experience In EMT
TRV / RRRV studies
Switching transient analysis
Transformer energisation / inrush
Insulation coordination and/or ferroresonance
Additional Strengths (desirable But Not Essential) -
Earthing system design and safety studies
Substation / transmission system experience
Tools -
Strong experience with PSCAD or EMTP-type platforms (critical)
Exposure to CDEGS and/or power system tools (DIgSILENT, PSSE, ETAP)
What Jacobs Offers -
A serious technical environment—you'll work with people who know this space.
Direct access to senior EMT and earthing specialists.
A culture that supports deep technical growth, not just delivery.
Exposure to high-value, technically challenging projects.
Flexibility, strong team culture, and long-term career pathways.
Applicants must have full working rights required in Australia or New Zealand
