About the role:
As a Mental Health Specialist Educator, you will utilise your mental health expertise to develop the capability of police officers and the increase the organisational capability in responding to mental health events. This is an extraordinary opportunity to improve outcomes for Victoria Police, the Mental Health System and the community.
Working with a small team of senior police officers and other Specialist Educators, you will also conduct research, design, develop, deliver and evaluate PRIME (Police Responding in Mental Health Events) training programs. This role is most suitable for an experienced mental health practitioner who has a passion for developing the capability of others to improve the outcomes of those experiencing a mental health crisis.
Project PRIME is established to:
1. increase knowledge and skills required by Police Officers, Protective Service Officers (PSOs) and Police Custody Officers (PCOs) to better manage situations involving persons experiencing mental health issues in the community;
2. achieve outcomes that minimise harm to the individual, attending police and community in situations involving mental health issues; and
3. facilitate diversion to assessment and treatment.

Your duties will include:
4. Facilitation of mental health training programs, including role playing a person in crisis;
5. Provide coaching and/ or advice on mental health issues and/ or events;
6. Conduct research to identify trends within mental health and policing;
7. Design and development of various PRIME training programs;
8. Evaluation of mental health training programs to ensure continuous improvement and to inform future learning programs;
9. Support the project team to deliver on the project outcomes.
As the successful applicant, you will have:
10. Demonstrated experience working in the mental health system;
11. Exceptional stakeholder management skills and a strong focus on the end user of the training programs;
12. Experience in facilitation and/ or design of training programs preferably content related to mental health;
13. Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement and quality assurance;
14. A degree or higher qualification, appropriate to the relevant discipline area, or equivalent accreditation and standing. Preferable in mental health / psychology and education.
Requirements and relevant information:
15. The positions will be based in either Melbourne East Police Station or Dandenong/ Forest Hill Police Stations and most of the training delivery (two to four days a week) will occur in the Eastern/ Southern Metro Regions.
16. A work vehicle is allocated to attend the venues to conduct training and other business travel
17. Non delivery, office days (one to three days per week) will be conducted at the host police station (Melbourne East or Dandenong/ Forest Hill) you may work from other stations within the Eastern/ Southern Metro Region and Work From Home is an option as part of an agreed flexible working arrangement.
18. The PRIME Unit management is based at Victoria Police Academy, 1 View Mount Road, Glen Waverley VIC 3150.
19. Travel within Victoria and overnight accommodation is a requirement of the position, usually for one week in every four to six weeks.
20. There is a requirement to travel on a Sunday OR a Saturday when attending OR returning from some regional locations.
21. Both positions are fixed term, expiring on the 30th June 2024
