The role

As Team Manager Retail & Service Industries, you will lead a team of inspectors delivering safety outcomes through complex investigations, regulatory enforcement, and the provision of WHS (Work Health and Safety) advice in the workplace. In this role, you will set clear expectations, support capability development, and promote a positive and professional team culture aligned with the Department's values and ethical standards.

Drawing on your expertise in regulatory compliance, investigations, and people leadership, you will play a key role in ensuring workplaces meet WHS legislative requirements, improving safety outcomes, and supporting the Directorate's strategic priorities through effective planning, risk management, and stakeholder engagement.

Your leadership capability and experience in WHS regulations will be central to your success. You will manage team resources, plan and prioritise operational activities, and lead the development of initiatives that align with the Directorate's Business Plan and broader organisational objectives, while coaching and mentoring staff to perform confidently in a complex regulatory environment.

You will bring expertise in compliance, legislation and enforcement, together with a strong commitment to developing and sustaining a high‐performing team. Through effective supportive constructive feedback and ongoing professional development, you will foster a positive and inclusive team culture. Your ability to engage with internal and external stakeholders, represent the Department at state and national forums, and provide specialised advice on complex WHS issues will contribute to strong regulatory practice, improved safety outcomes, and the Department's commitment to workplace health and safety.

To be eligible for a permanent appointment, applicants must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or have a visa to live and work indefinitely in Australia at the time of application. Should a qualification be required for this position, applicants must provide their certification and/or academic transcripts to verify relevance to the job requirements. Qualifications obtained outside of Australia must be provided with an assessment from the Overseas Qualifications Unit to ensure they meet Australian Standards (this is a free service).

To work for LGIRS, you must consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a clearance before you start. If deemed suitable, LGIRS will coordinate and pay for your NCCHC as part of your pre‐employment checks.

Role specific requirements:

* Demonstrated experience in influencing WHS outcomes in workplaces in a sector relevant to this position.
* Demonstrated highly developed communication and interpersonal skills to build and sustain effective relationships and partnerships.
* Demonstrated high degree of competency in project and team management.

This role is identified as having a higher likelihood of exposure to potentially traumatic events. This is any distressing experience or situation in which an individual's physical or psychological wellbeing may be threatened. This could involve attending or investigating safety incidents or fatalities, interacting with affected, distressed and/or aggressive people, and exposure to objectionable material such as records containing potentially traumatic content.

The department has specific Potentially Traumatic Event Response Support processes and training available for this role. If you have any questions or would like further clarification about the nature of this position and the supports available, please contact relevant department officials.
