About the Role
We're seeking a hands-on Lead Software Engineer with strong .NET and Azure experience to own the overall software solutions for the business and provide technical leadership to a small, capable development team.
This role suits someone who is more proactive than the average developer who waits for detailed specifications. You'll work end-to-end: engaging with business stakeholders, clarifying problems, shaping requirements, designing and building solutions, and iterating based on feedback.
In addition to hands-on development, you'll provide technical direction, prioritisation support, and delivery structure for the team - helping ensure work is well-sequenced, visible, and aligned to business outcomes, without unnecessary process overhead.
You'll also play a key role in supporting and improving existing legacy systems while driving the steady modernisation of our platforms.
What You'll Be Doing
* Spend a significant portion of your time hands-on in the codebase, delivering new features, improvements, and fixes alongside the team
* Work directly with users and stakeholders to understand workflows, pain points, and desired outcomes
* Translate business needs into practical technical solutions, including exploring options, trade-offs, risks, and impacts
* Design and build functionality using .NET (C# / VB.NET)
* Develop UI features using Razor and JavaScript
* Build and consume APIs and integrate with existing systems
* Write and optimise SQL Server queries, stored procedures, and database changes
* Provide technical leadership and guidance to a small development team, including design direction and code quality standards
* Help organise and prioritise development work into clear, achievable chunks that can be delivered incrementally
* Facilitate lightweight planning and prioritisation discussions to align the team on what matters most
* Deploy, operate, and troubleshoot applications in Microsoft Azure
* Maintain and enhance existing legacy platforms, including troubleshooting, support, and incremental improvements
* Drive the modernisation of legacy systems, improving architecture, performance, maintainability, and cloud readiness
* Identify opportunities to improve reliability, security, and operational efficiency across platforms
About You
* Strong experience with .NET development (C# and/or VB.NET)
* Solid JavaScript skills for interactive front-end work
* Experience with Razor (ASP.NET MVC / Razor Pages)
* Strong SQL Server skills (schema design, query optimisation, stored procedures)
* Practical experience with Microsoft Azure (deploying, supporting, or integrating cloud services)
* Experience working with legacy platforms and improving them over time
* Comfortable taking ownership, managing priorities, and working closely with developers and business stakeholders
* Experience facilitating planning or prioritisation discussions in small teams
* Enjoys leading by influence, clarity, and collaboration rather than heavy process
Nice to haves
* Experience with Azure services such as App Service, Azure SQL, Storage Accounts/Blob, Azure Functions, Service Bus/Queues, Key Vault, Application Insights
* CI/CD experience (Azure DevOps or similar)
* Experience modernising legacy applications (refactoring, re-architecture, migration patterns, incremental replacement)
