The Role
The Australian Army History Unit (AAHU) is seeking a capable and motivated APS 5 Business Manager to support the effective delivery of the Unit’s financial and business operations. The role is based at Campbell Park, ACT, within a small, integrated Defence workforce.
Under limited direction, the APS 5 Business Manager contributes to the correct application of Defence and Australian Government financial policy and supports the execution of finance and resource management processes across the Unit. Key responsibilities include procurement, minor contracting activities, and coordination and oversight of business travel arrangements for Unit members. The role supports the management of an annual budget of up to $2 million per financial year.
The position requires working knowledge, or the ability to quickly develop knowledge, of Defence enterprise systems including ERP and ACMS, and the application of those systems to ensure accurate financial processing, compliance, and reporting. About our Team
The Australian Army History Unit (AAHU) is a mixed workforce comprised of uniformed and APS personnel, supported by Army Reserve members and volunteers. The Headquarters is a small, high performing team, including four fulltime Army staff and a similar number of Army Reserve personnel.
The Business Manager reports directly to the Operations Officer and is responsive to the Chief of Staff, AAHU. You will work as part of a close internal management team alongside the Logistics Manager and Chief Clerk. The Unit operates nationally, with a Headquarters in Canberra and 17 museums and a central repository located across all States except the Northern Territory. These sites are staffed by Army Reserve members, APS curators, and civilian volunteers, requiring the Business Manager to support geographically dispersed operations.
Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate is a motivated and reliable professional who demonstrates initiative, sound judgement, and the ability to work with a degree of autonomy under limited supervision. You will be comfortable operating in a small team environment, managing routine tasks independently while escalating more complex issues appropriately. You will have experience or demonstrated capability in financial administration, procurement, and resource management, with the ability to organise your workload, meet deadlines, and provide accurate and timely advice.
The successful candidate will possess, or be willing to rapidly develop, an understanding of relevant legislation, Defence policy, and government financial frameworks. Experience in an Australian Government or Defence financial environment will be highly regarded, along with the ability to quickly learn and apply Defence specific systems and procedures. Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and a customer focused approach are essential to support stakeholders across the Unit and broader Defence environment.
