What you'll be doing
The Cloud Networking & Security Domain Lead provides strategic, architectural, and delivery leadership across all networking and security components of a major Australian Federal Government Azure migration program. The role spanson‐premises data centres,WAN and inter‐site connectivity, andAzure cloud networking and security services, ensuring secure, resilient, and compliant hybrid operations throughout the migration lifecycle.
This position requires aNegative Vetting Level 1 (NV1)clearance due to the sensitivity of government systems, data classifications, and cross‐domain integration work.
* Lead the architectural design, uplift, and integration of hybrid networking between Federal Government data centres and Azure.
* Oversee routing, segmentation, and connectivity strategies across traditional data centre environments, including:
o Cisco Nexus/ACI
o F5 load balancers
o Palo Alto / Fortinet firewalls
o Cisco ASA/Firepower
o Data centre fabric switching (leaf‐spine, OTV, VXLAN, etc.)
o WAN optimisation platforms
* Ensure continuity and interoperability between legacy systems, critical infrastructure, and cloud‐based services.
* Govern IP addressing, routing domains, DNS, DHCP, and security zoning across both cloud and data centre environments.
* Architect and govern Azure networking services including VNets, Virtual WAN, ExpressRoute circuits, VPN gateways, load balancing, private endpoints, and service networking.
* Ensure Azure landing zones follow secure‐by‐design networking patterns aligned to ASD ISM and Federal Government protective markings.
* Oversee end‐to‐end connectivity for migration waves, including application dependencies, firewall/security rule migration, and traffic flow transformations.
Security Architecture & Compliance
* Lead security design for hybrid and cloud environments: zero trust, micro‐segmentation, encryption, identity boundaries, conditional access, and privileged access pathways.
* Align all designs and delivery outputs to:
o ASD Information Security Manual (ISM)
o Essential Eight maturity targets
o PSPF requirements
o Agency accreditation processes
* Support IRAP assessments, penetration testing activities, and security certification/accreditation programs.
* Mature monitoring, SIEM/SOAR integration (e.g., Sentinel), and network security operation processes across cloud and data centre systems.
Program Delivery & Technical Leadership
* Provide technical authority and governance across the entire networking & security domain.
* Lead cross‐functional engineering teams, vendors, and integrators delivering hybrid networking and security capabilities.
* Manage technical dependencies across data centre, cloud, security, identity, and application migration streams.
* Oversee secure cutovers, migration runbooks, connectivity testing, and operational readiness activities.
* Act as the primary technical liaison with ICT teams, network carriers, managed service providers, cloud vendors, and integrators.
* Communicate complex hybrid networking and security concepts to both senior executive and engineering audiences.
* Contribute to architecture review boards, change authorities, and security governance forums.
What will make you successful in this role?
* Extensive experience leading hybrid/cloud networking and security integrations in Federal Government or regulated environments.
* Deep hands‐on expertise with enterprise and government data centre technologies, such as:
o Cisco routing/switching (Nexus, Catalyst, ACI)
o Enterprise‐grade firewalls (Palo Alto, Fortinet, Check Point)
o F5 LTM/ASM
o MPLS, SD‐WAN, BGP, OSPF, WAN architecture
o DDoS protection and cross‐domain solutions
* Strong experience designing and implementing Azure networking and security services:
o ExpressRoute, VNet Peering, Virtual WAN
o Azure Firewall, Application Gateway, WAF
o NSGs/ASGs, Private Link, DNS, load balancing
* Strong knowledge of security frameworks and standards (ASD ISM, PSPF, IRAP, Essential Eight).
o Demonstrated leadership of multi‐vendor engineering teams and complex, high‐security migration programs.
o Excellent documentation, communication, and stakeholder management.
Desirable Qualifications
* Experience with Protected‐level or classified environments.
* Background in cross‐domain security or network segmentation in secure enclaves.
* Experience with multi‐cloud or hybrid WAN architectures.
