We are looking for a dedicated privacy lawyer to join one of Australia's leading banks, in a highly autonomous role within a dynamic team. The position offers broad exposure across the CBA Group and manages a broad range of privacy law matters. Hybrid working arrangements are available.
About CBA's Competition, Privacy and Data Legal team
The Competition, Privacy and Data Legal team provides Group‐wide specialist competition, privacy and data law advice and supports the Group's strategic projects.
Team Functions
* Providing day‐to‐day privacy law advice.
* Strategic input on banking industry consultations, initiatives and advocacy on emerging laws in privacy, digital identity, and the Consumer Data Right.
* Advising on privacy and data governance risks and opportunities for Group AI projects and partnerships.
* Leading the Legal and Group Secretariat engagement with the OAIC (including data breach notification, preliminary inquiries, conciliations and investigations).
Senior Lawyer Responsibilities
* Work as a senior member, providing specialist privacy advice to CBA's business units on new products, compliance, transactions and international activities.
* Lead effective and proactive engagement with key stakeholders and senior management across the Group; provide insights on privacy and data risk and clear, actionable recommendations.
* Where necessary, manage external legal engagement on specific matters, transactions or regulatory responses.
* Actively contribute to team culture, excelling in customer service, simplifying processes and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement.
* Lead, mentor and develop the team's Legal Counsel/Junior Legal Counsels where opportunities arise.
Qualifications and Experience
* Minimum 6 years PQE with a current practising certificate; experience in highly regulated industries such as banking, energy, telecommunications (beneficial).
* Deep privacy law experience, strong technical legal and analytical skills, exceptional written and verbal communication, and proven ability to apply principles of statutory interpretation.
* Experience advising on data analytics projects, ad‐tech privacy risk, complex data breach incidents, data governance for AI development and deployment, Consumer Data Right matters, surveillance laws and international privacy laws is preferred (but not essential).
* Demonstrated ability to build and influence trusted relationships across large and varied stakeholder groups, then partner with those groups to drive commercial outcomes.
* Best practice for delivery of legal services and a proactive, solutions‐focused approach.
