We are currently seeking an experienced Senior Payroll Officer to join a large, complex local government payroll environment on a long-term contract based in Bankstown.
About the Role:Reporting to the Team Leader Payroll, the Senior Payroll Officer plays a critical role in ensuring the accurate, compliant and efficient delivery of payroll services to a diverse workforce. Acting as second-in-charge (2IC), you will provide specialist payroll expertise, support team capability, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
This role is ideal for a seasoned payroll professional who thrives in a high-volume, compliance-driven environment and is passionate about delivering high-quality customer service.
Key Responsibilities
* Deliver accurate and timely fortnightly payroll runs in line with documented payroll processes and legislative requirements
* Act as 2IC to the Team Leader Payroll, providing leadership, guidance and specialist payroll support
* Maintain the integrity, accuracy and compliance of employee payroll master data
* Oversee timesheet, leave and workers compensation processing to ensure correct and timely payments
* Review, investigate and action payroll exception reports
* Accurately calculate and/or review termination payments and entitlements
* Prepare, analyse and action a range of payroll and statutory reports
* Complete superannuation, ATO and statutory reporting, ensuring compliance with legislative obligations
* Reconcile payroll clearing accounts within the general ledger
* Liaise with external organisations including Super Choice providers, unions, financial institutions and government agencies
* Respond to payroll and personnel enquiries in a professional, customer-focused manner
* Support SAP and SuccessFactors payroll processes, upgrades and system improvements
* Participate in payroll-related projects and continuous improvement initiatives
* Stay current with payroll legislation, industrial awards, policies and best-practice payroll standards
About You You are an experienced and highly organised payroll professional with strong technical knowledge, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to accuracy, integrity and service excellence. You are confident handling complex payroll matters and enjoy working collaboratively in a senior support role.
Essential Skills & Experience
* Minimum 5 years' payroll experience
* Demonstrated experience managing end-to-end payroll processing
* Strong experience using SAP or similar HR/Payroll systems, including master data maintenance and reporting
* Proven experience interpreting and applying industrial awards
* Solid understanding of payroll-related financial and compliance processes
* Advanced skills in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel
* Strong planning, prioritisation, problem-solving and deadline-management skills
Desirable Experience
* Experience developing and implementing payroll process improvements
* Experience using SAP Query Manager for reporting
