Job Description
The Director of Accounting is a senior-level leadership position responsible for overseeing all accounting and reporting activities.
Under the direction of the Chief Financial Officer, the Director of Accounting is responsible for the ongoing development and monitoring of control systems designed to preserve company assets and report accurate financial results and analysis.
The Director of Accounting monitors, supervises and evaluates all daily accounting activities and collects, analyzes, verifies and reports a myriad of financial information.
Providing leadership to the accounting team, the Director of Accounting also works closely with senior level executives and departmental leadership and teams throughout the organization.
Some of the key responsibilities include:
* Supervising the accounting team and managing all functions of the accounting department including general accounting and reporting, accounts receivable, revenue recognition and deposits, cash management, accounts payable and payroll.
* Directing the month-end close process to ensure timely and accurate recording and reporting of financial information, including preparation of financial statements.
* Establishing and maintaining the organization's overall accounting systems, procedures, and policies to ensure accuracy and integrity.
* Directing all preparation, analysis and reporting of financial information including budgets, planning, and required filings and reports. Presenting findings and recommendations to management.
* Managing all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems according to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and regulatory requirements.
* Maintaining strong internal controls and safeguards to protect company assets. Examining accounting records to assess accuracy.
* Overseeing all financial, project/program and grants accounting. Ensuring that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period.
* Recruiting, hiring, supervising and identifying & offering appropriate training & development for staff.
* Preparing financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundations.
* Providing leadership in strengthening internal communications with department staff.
* Developing performance measures that support the company's strategic direction.
* Identifying challenges and gaps across accounting and financial systems, technology, process and people and recommending opportunities to improve automation, efficiency, and scalability.
* Assisting CFO in analyzing financial data and presenting financial reports to CEO and Board in an accurate and timely manner.
Requirements and Qualifications
The ideal candidate will hold a Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance; Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license and/or Master's Degree is preferred.
At least 10 years progressive accounting and financial experience, with 5-7 years in a management role; preferrable in a nonprofit or related industry.
