Technical Services at UTS support teaching, research, and operational excellence across disciplines. Dedicated technical teams manage laboratories, fieldwork logistics, and specialist facilities, while overseeing procurement, asset management, and compliance with safety protocols. Within the Faculty of Science, Technical Services provides dedicated support for teaching and research laboratories, fieldwork operations, and specialist facilities. Teams support safe and reliable scientific activity through local operational readiness, equipment support and adherence to University Work Health & Safety requirements.
About the Role
The Senior Scientific Officer (MAU) provides advanced technical expertise to support high‑quality microstructural and materials characterisation services within the Microstructural Analysis Unit (MAU). The role contributes to service delivery, training, and operational oversight to enable research, teaching and external engagement outcomes.
Role responsibilities
* Support delivery of MAU analytical services, including coordination of workflows, scheduling and user support.
* Provide advanced user training, competency assessment and technical consultation within the MAU capability.
* Coordinate instrument readiness, maintenance and documentation to ensure safe, compliant and reliable operation.
* Contribute to development and maintenance of SOPs, user guides and quality practices.
* Assist with supervision, work allocation and capability development of assigned staff, where applicable.
* Support teaching activities through coordination of access, setup and safe operation of facilities.
* Contribute to health and safety compliance, risk assessments and audit follow‑up within the facility.
Skills, attributes and knowledge
* Strong organisational and time management skills in a service‑oriented environment.
* Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively within technical services teams.
* Well‑developed written and verbal communication skills for technical and non‑technical audiences.
* Capability to train and support users on specialised microscopy and materials characterisation equipment.
* Customer‑focused approach to service delivery and scheduling.
* Specialised knowledge of microscopy, materials characterisation and sample preparation workflows.
* Understanding of WHS requirements and shared analytical facility operations.
Experience
* Experience using electron microscopy and/or related microstructural characterisation platforms.
* Experience providing advanced technical training and consultation to researchers and students.
* Experience developing and maintaining SOPs and technical documentation.
* Experience maintaining and troubleshooting complex analytical instrumentation.
* Experience applying WHS practices in laboratory environments.
Qualifications
* A relevant degree with extensive work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
What We Offer
Base Salary Range: $120,827 - $137,609 (HEW8) plus 17% superannuation (pension)
The position is full time and will be made on a continuing basis.
