Law Clerk – Criminal Defence Firm (Townsville)
Casual Position – Ideal for Law Graduates and/or Current Law Students
We are a small, dynamic and fast-paced criminal defence law firm based in Townsville, looking for a motivated and confident Law Clerk to join our team. This role would commence initially as a casual role with opportunity to move to permanent hours.
The role offers exceptional hands‑on experience for a current law student seeking real exposure to the practise of criminal law.
The role would require a commitment of 5 days per week, Monday to Friday, initially starting with half days at 8am finishing at midday.
The role would commence in mid‑late January 2026.

Important notice about this role
In this role you will be exposed to traumatic material or traumatic events. This will include reading, hearing, or seeing accounts, photos, videos or other material related to traumatic events. The material may be unexpected, confronting, explicit, graphic, distressing, and/or offensive. You will also be required to engage with people who have and may continue to experience traumatic events that may be confronting and/or distressing.
Key Responsibilities
* Appearing on mentions in the Magistrates, District and Supreme Court;
* Undertaking day‑to‑day legal administration, including answering telephones, diary management and organising conferences;
* Interviewing clients and taking detailed instructions;
* Attending correctional centres to conference with clients;
* Liaising with legal practitioners, police and court staff;
* Travel as required (must hold a current valid driver's licence), including overnight stays in regional centres and Brisbane; and
* Other tasks as directed.
About You
This role is well‑suited to a new graduate or current law student who is eager to build practical skills in criminal defence. You will be working closely with solicitors and barristers, gaining invaluable courtroom and client‑facing experience.

A criminal history check will be undertaken for this position on the proposed successful applicant due to the nature of the work involved.
The successful applicant will need to be approved to visit correctional centres in Queensland by Queensland Corrective Services and will be required to undergo a criminal history check and provide their photograph and fingerprints to Queensland Corrective Services.
The successful applicant will be required to disclose relevant conflicts of interest prior to or on commencement and throughout their employment.
The successful applicant will be required to sign and agree to be bound by the terms of a confidentiality agreement.
