The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement, providing high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, advocating for social justice and equity.
What Will You Do?
In this role, you will be an integral and valued member of a highly skilled Criminal Law Practice.
* Undertaking daily duty bail, Galambany Circle sentencing, and list work;
* Providing culturally appropriate legal advice and representation to Aboriginal clients, assisting them in resolving legal issues and undertaking Court responsibilities;
* Offering independent, balanced, and professional criminal law advice;
* Performing criminal law appearance work within the ACT Magistrates Court and Children’s Court;
* Researching, preparing, and representing Aboriginal clients in criminal law matters, including briefing counsel and instructing counsel.
Who Are We Looking For?
A highly skilled and motivated individual with a thorough understanding of the cultural, social, and historical needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. You will demonstrate:
* Legal qualifications and a current ACT Practising Certificate (or the ability to obtain one immediately);
* Up-to-date knowledge of criminal law, including practice and procedure;
* The capacity to identify and understand legal issues facing socially and economically disadvantaged Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples;
* Excellent written and oral communication skills, along with strong time management, legal research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
