The role involves supporting and nurturing children with moderate to extreme support needs, often under child protection orders, especially when they cannot be with their family. The goal is to ensure every child and young person in the program feels heard, safe, and valued, while being connected to family and culture to achieve the best outcomes and positive experiences.
Selection Criteria
* Ability to support children and young people with complex needs, including understanding trauma impacts.
* Knowledge of positive behaviour support strategies and trauma-informed care aligned with Standards of Care.
* Strong interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills for effective collaboration with Child Safety Services and other stakeholders.
* Understanding of the Child Protection Act, especially regarding working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
* Commitment to confidentiality and respecting the rights of children and young people under Child Protection Orders.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
* Engage with children and young people to support their development in all aspects of life.
* Use observational skills to assess needs and contribute to care planning.
* Facilitate development of life skills appropriate to each child's age and ability.
* Maintain residence routines, including household tasks like cleaning and cooking.
* Support family contact and connections as approved by Child Safety or delegated authorities.
* Organise and support social, recreational, educational, and health activities per individual care plans.
* Collaborate with team members and other involved parties to ensure consistent and quality care.
* Implement and review care strategies to meet children’s goals.
* Create a therapeutic environment by modelling positive behaviour and ensuring safety and stability.
* Maintain accurate, high-quality records in compliance with policies and legal requirements.
* Respect privacy and dignity when sharing information.
* Report incidents promptly and factually, following procedures.
* Stay informed about relevant legislation, standards, and best practices.
* Utilise IT systems effectively, including Microsoft Office and client management software.
* Assist in planning activities and events for children and carers.
* Promote positive communication about children and families, respecting confidentiality.
* Participate in staff meetings, training, and professional development activities.
* Contribute to policy development and continuous improvement initiatives.
* Support a healthy, supportive, and creative work environment.
* Prioritise workplace health and safety, and the wellbeing of clients and staff.
* Manage contractual obligations appropriately.
* Keep records and statistics current and meet organisational requirements for reporting and compliance.
