The Student Identifiers Registrar is a statutory office holder appointed by the Commonwealth Minister to lead the national administration, governance and performance of the Unique Student Identifier (USI) initiative. Established under the Student Identifiers Act 2014, the USI underpins trusted access to education and training records across the VET and higher education sectors and expansion into the school sector underway.
About the role
As Registrar, you will lead one of Australia’s largest education data initiatives. You are accountable for the end‑to‑end administration of Usis and will ensure all systems and processes meet the highest standards of legislative compliance, privacy, security and governance.
As the public face of the USI, you will build strong, trusted relationships across government, education providers and senior stakeholders. You will lead responses to operational and cyber risks, oversee the initiative’s financial governance, advise government on future policy and design, and represent the initiative publicly. You will set strategic direction for the Adelaide‑based staff supporting the role, with flexibility to work from any major Australian city.
About you
You are an experienced senior executive with a proven record of leading complex, high‑stakes programs in legislated or policy‑driven environments. You bring strategic vision, sound judgement and the ability to deliver high‑profile, nationwide programs. You have a strong grasp of governance, privacy, risk management and public accountability, and you are confident operating as an independent statutory decision‑maker.
You lead with integrity and professionalism, inspire high‑performing and inclusive teams, and champion continuous improvement and service excellence. You excel at building trusted relationships with Ministers, senior officials and external stakeholders, and at providing clear, influential advice.
You are a confident and credible communicator, comfortable representing an organisation publicly and in parliamentary settings, and experienced in managing operational disruptions or security incidents. Experience working in or with government, particularly on large ICT‑enabled initiatives, will position you strongly for success.
