Principal Architect – Digital Operations | Director Level | Sydney
A global FS group is looking for a Principal Architect to take ownership of how the business orchestrates work across its entire Digital Operations estate. Newly created role, exec-sponsored, multi-year programme.
The problem you're solving
The business is migrating off a legacy BPM platform onto Temporal as its strategic orchestration layer. No one currently owns the architecture end-to-end — and the gap is showing up as fragmented tooling, default vendor lock-in, and stalled initiatives. That's the job.
What you'll own
* Orchestration target architecture — Temporal as master orchestrator, legacy BPM retained as a thin operator UI for 1,000+ ops staff, Salesforce for relationship management, custom UIs everywhere else
* Progressive decommission of the legacy BPM platform — workflow logic, business rules, and system integrations migrated to Temporal-backed SpringBoot Java services
* Banking Core API agenda — unblocking SAP and other legacy platforms so live delivery initiatives stop stalling on missing APIs
* Unified operator UI strategy across party, payments, fraud, arrears, complaints, disputes, and cases
* Orchestration decision framework covering the full spectrum — synchronous calls through to long-running durable workflows, human-in-the-loop case management, and high-volume event streaming
* Agentic AI readiness — how agents sit within the Temporal spine, where humans stay in the loop
What you bring
* 15+ years in enterprise architecture or platform engineering, significant time at Principal or Lead Architect level
* Hands-on workflow orchestration experience — Temporal or Cadence in production is a strong differentiator
* Proven track record migrating an organisation off a monolithic BPM platform (Pega, Appian, Camunda, or equivalent)
* Strong grounding in event-driven systems, saga patterns, and human-in-the-loop workflow design
* Regulated financial services background — APRA, CPS 230, operational risk
* Coding background within the last decade — this culture fits hands-on people who moved into architecture, not career-long design-only profiles
* Sharp written communication — position papers and architecture decision records are core deliverables
Ranges from $250-300k package + bonus + stock
