Senior IBM DataStage ETL Software Engineer (Developer)
Location: Canberra, Melbourne, Brisbane or Adelaide
Contract Term: 12 months + 2 × 12‐month extensions (up to 36 months total)
Security Clearance: Ability to obtain Baseline (mandatory)
About the Role: Our Federal Government department is seeking a highly experienced Senior IBM DataStage ETL Software Engineer to join a major data integration and transformation program. You'll play a key role in designing, developing and optimising enterprise ETL solutions that support mission‐critical services relied on by millions of Australians.
This is a senior engineering position ideal for a DataStage specialist who enjoys leading development work, solving complex data challenges, and working within a modern, hybrid government environment.
Key Responsibilities
* Design, develop and optimise ETL workflows using IBM InfoSphere DataStage (parallel, server, and sequence jobs).
* Work closely with business analysts, data architects and stakeholders to translate requirements into scalable technical solutions.
* Implement data quality, cleansing and validation processes.
* Monitor, troubleshoot and resolve ETL job performance issues, failures and data discrepancies.
* Enhance existing DataStage jobs to meet evolving business and reporting needs.
* Produce clear documentation for design, workflow logic and operational support.
* Ensure compliance with data governance, privacy and security standards.
* Provide technical leadership, guidance and best practice input into ETL development.
* Support release, deployment, configuration and integration activities across the platform.
Skills & Experience
Essential
* Strong experience with IBM DataStage across complex enterprise environments.
* Deep understanding of ETL concepts, data warehousing and dimensional modelling.
* Advanced SQL skills and experience with relational database technologies (Oracle, DB2, SQL Server, PostgreSQL).
* Experience integrating data from structured, semi‐structured and unstructured sources.
* Linux/UNIX shell scripting skills for automation and orchestration.
* Strong problem‐solving, debugging and analytical capability.
* Experience in an agile or hybrid delivery environment.
Desirable
* Exposure to cloud data platforms (AWS, Azure or GCP).
* Experience with configuration management tools and processes.
* Familiarity with automated testing frameworks and CI/CD pipelines.
