The National Geodesy section is responsible for ensuring that Australia has a state-of-the-art geospatial reference system that enables accurate and robust precise positioning. The team leads Australia's international contribution to the sustainment of the Global Geodetic Reference Frame and is responsible for a range of geodetic observation functions supporting Australia's positioning capabilities, including remote Satellite Laser Ranging and Very Long Baseline Interferometry facilities, as well as Gravity programs.
The key duties of the position include:
The Geodetic Officer role provides critical technical input to the National Geodesy section's work program, focusing on the Australian Geospatial Reference System (AGRS).
In this role you will contribute to the operation, maintenance, and modernisation of ARGS workflows, including coordination with key project partners.
In this role you will:
* Provide technical operational support to maintain the Australian Geospatial Reference System, ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and continuity of national positioning infrastructure.
* Execute national geodetic adjustments that define and realise Australia's geodetic datum, applying best-practice adjustment methodologies, uncertainty modelling, and validation techniques following the process guideline.
* Engage and collaborate with key state and territory stakeholders to respond to, and resolve technical issues promptly, maintaining ARGS quality standards.
* Conduct complex research and analysis towards combining geodetic observations with other geodetic or geophysical measurements, and publish outcomes
* Develop, review, and maintain technical adjustment methodologies, work instructions, and specifications, ensuring adjustments and derived products are reproducible, auditable, and scientifically defensible.
* Lead and contribute to technical projects that modernise and improve AGRS workflows, providing expert input, coordinating technical activities, and working with contractors and partners as required.
* Support the maintenance, enhancement and modernisation of our computing environments, including AWS and NCI, analytical software and version control systems.
* Prepare and provide advice, information, and support on geodesy and positioning to a diverse range of stakeholders both internal and external.
* Demonstrate technical leadership, including professional supervision and reviewing the work of peers within the Positioning Australia program.
* Contribute to the positive team culture through continuous delivery, development, agility and stakeholder engagement.
* Assist the broader National Geodesy team with other operational and technical activities as required.

Required skills, knowledge, experience and/or qualifications
* Technical qualifications in geodesy and / or geospatial science or equivalent.
* Experience with the development of elements of a geospatial reference system including datums, geoid models and coordinate transformation tools.
* Experience working collaboratively with a diverse range of stakeholders, across different agencies and domains of expertise.
* Proficiency in scientific and/or data analysis programming in at least one of the programming languages: Python, C, C++, Fortran, or equivalent.
* Experience with the Linux operating system, familiarity with cloud computing environments and proficiency in version control systems, particularly Git, is an advantage.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts clearly and effectively to a variety of audiences.
