Primary objective
To manage the day-to-day functions of the Sheriff’s Office and the criminal jurisdiction of the Alice Springs Registry, including
administering the jury system, overseeing the custody and escort of prisoners, and the provision of court support services for the Supreme
Court of the Northern Territory, including the leadership and management of staff.

Context statement
The Supreme Court of the Northern Territory sits in Darwin and Alice Springs. The Sheriff leads and manages a diverse team of staff to
ensure court support services meet the needs of the Judiciary and stakeholders, including legal practitioners and persons appearing before
the Court. The Sheriff also exercises statutory powers prescribed in the Sheriff Act 1962 (NT).

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Discharge the statutory powers and duties of Sheriff under the Sheriff Act 1962 (NT) and ensure the issue of process in accordance

with relevant legislation, regulations and rules.
2. Provide leadership and management to a team of staff working within the Sheriff’s Office and Alice Springs Registry to meet the

Court’s objectives, which includes the training, development and performance management of those staff, and creating a working
environment that is inclusive, culturally safe and focused on delivering high quality services to Court users.

3. Manage all Sheriff’s Office operations, including financial and human resource management activities, to support the productive and
effective case management of criminal matters before the Court.

4. Manage the Northern Territory Jury System, which includes strategies to improve juror attendance.
5. Manage the security and custodial activities of the Court sitting in both Darwin and Alice Springs, including prisoner escort, in

accordance with statutory, security and cultural considerations.
6. Maintain contemporary knowledge of current and emerging issues in relation to the operation of the criminal jurisdiction of the Court

to inform the development of policies, procedures and practice standards across both the Sheriff’s Office and Alice Springs Registry.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Extensive knowledge of, or an ability to quickly acquire knowledge of, the day-to-day functions of the Sheriff’s Office and the role of

the Supreme Court, including the legislative framework within which it operates.
2. Demonstrated experience leading and managing a team, including motivating staff to achieve high quality client-focused outcomes

and creating a positive work culture in a high volume and at times demanding operating environment.
3. High-level organisational skills with a demonstrated ability to make clear, well-reasoned and timely decisions in accordance with

relevant legislation.
4. Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to develop and maintaining productive working

relationships with internal and external stakeholders to achieve the Court’s objectives.
5. Demonstrated high degree of judgement and the ability to understand the broader operating environment to deal appropriately with

matters of a highly sensitive and confidential nature.
