BC Today is hiring a full-time reporter in Victoria to cover provincial politics from the legislature.
AB Today and BC Today are subscription-based political newsletters — think Axios meets Politico Pro — read by thousands of professionals in Canada’s political sphere.
We are seeking a reporter to develop story ideas, cultivate sources and find scoops.
Ideally, you have newsroom experience reporting daily political news in a major municipality, or provincial legislature.
In addition to having strong journalistic fundamentals, the desired candidate is self-motivated and very reliable. You must be able to work independently and hold your work to a high standard.
The successful candidate will work with the editor on the daily report.
You must be available from Sunday to Thursday.
We offer 10 days of vacation, plus an extended winter holiday break and numerous holiday long weekends throughout the year. The job also includes a $2,000 health spending account.
Qualifications
Required skills:
* Journalism experience
* Ability to craft news into excellent newsletter content
* Commitment to objective and factually accurate reporting
* Copy-editing and fact-checking experience
* Knowledge of CP style
* Background knowledge of hot political issues across Canada
Assets:
* Familiarity with Google docs
* Strong and lively writing style
* Knowledge of parliamentary procedure
* Keen interest in the inner workings of politics
In addition to a resume, cover letter, social media handles and two published writing samples, please respond with a one-paragraph answer to each of the following three questions:
* How is the balance of power in the legislature affected by the two BC Greens MLAs and Independent MLAs?
* If you had to hold one cabinet portfolio in British Columbia, which would you want to hold and why?
* Explain in your own words how a government bill gets passed into law under the current British Columbia government.
