Primary objective
The Indigenous Eye Health Assistant would work as part of and provide allied health assistance to the Ophthalmology department.
This would include but not be limited to doing clinical assessments such as checking Visual Acuity, Intra-ocular pressure and
performing a range of diagnostic scans. They would assist our Clinical Nurse Coordinator in efforts to reduce the rate of Did Not
Attend and educate Indigenous patients on common eye conditions and procedures such as Cataract surgery.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Prepare for and undertake clinical tasks under the direction and delegation of their direct supervisor.
2. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken
in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
3. Provide ophthalmic diagnostic services, including but not limited to, checking visual acuity, intra-ocular pressure, optical
coherence tomography, Humphrey visual fields and fundus photos.
4. Take part in the outreach program.
5. Participate in administrative support duties and assist allied health professionals with client-related records as per team policies.
6. Provide support and allow shadowing to students, trainees and new staff.
7. Work closely with the multi-disciplinary teams Doctors, Nurses/Aboriginal Health Practitioners and Allied Health Workers and
networking with government and non-government agencies.
8. Participate in quality improvement initiatives
9. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken
in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
10. Ensure accurate documentation of patients file notes and record keeping is maintained at a high level.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated understanding of multicultural diversity and the impacts on health outcomes.
2. Well-developed communication, interpersonal skills, negotiation and conflict management skills, with experience working in a
team environment to achieve positive health outcomes.
3. Ability to work under direction and instruction to assist health professionals provide high quality clinical services.
4. Ability to think laterally and solve problems independently with initiative and demonstrated organisational and time
management skills.
5. Working experience with clients and consumers within a health, aged care or disability setting.
6. Upholds a high level of personal integrity, confidentiality, adaptability and the ability to interact with diverse cultures.
7. Well-developed computer skills including use of Microsoft Office programs and the ability to learn new IT systems.
Desirable
1. A nationally recognised certificate III in Allied Health Assistance and be prepared to undertake training to attain the certificate
IV in Allied Health Assistance.
2. Experience identifying and participating in quality improvement initiatives to improve workplace practices.
