The National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA) leads and coordinates the Australian Government’s efforts to support the self-determination and aspirations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

About the Role
The NIAA is establishing a merit pool to fill APS Level 6 & Executive Level 1 vacancies within its Policy and Programs Portfolio that arise within 18 months from the date of initial advertisement.
The Policy and Programs Portfolio leads, influences and invests in social, cultural and economic policies and programs that contribute to improving the wellbeing and economic aspirations of First Nations people.
Responsibilities and Requirements
We’re seeking individuals who are passionate about contributing to meaningful outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and bring a diverse range of skills, capabilities and attributes, including:
- Cultural capability, including leading culturally respectful practices, promoting reconciliation, and embedding cultural awareness into policy and program design.
- Policy and program awareness, with the ability to provide strategic advice and oversight across complex policy areas impacting First Nations communities.
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to influence, negotiate, and tailor messages for senior stakeholders, diverse audiences, and high-level briefings.
- Analytical and problem-solving skills, with a focus on strategic, evidence-based decision-making, continuous improvement, and program evaluation.
- Adaptability and resilience, with the ability to lead through change, manage ambiguity, and support teams in dynamic and complex environments.
- Initiative and accountability, including the ability to manage risks, deliver outcomes aligned to strategic priorities, and take ownership of complex tasks and projects.
- Collaboration and teamwork, with the ability to build partnerships, facilitate cooperation across teams and agencies, and promote inclusive and respectful workplace practices.
