Technical Systems Specialist (Control & Communication Systems)

About The Role
The Technical Systems Specialist (Control & Communication Systems) is responsible for maintaining and optimising V/Line's Operational Technology assets, including train control systems, signalling communications networks, and level crossing monitoring infrastructure. This hands-on role involves diagnosing and resolving faults under time constraints, implementing technical solutions, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

You'll also manage firmware and device configurations, maintain accurate documentation, and support SCADA systems and communications backhaul. Based at V/Line's train control location, this position operates on an 8-days-on/6-days-off roster with paid overtime and occasional rail corridor access for on-site support.

Key accountabilities include:

* Perform fault diagnostics and rectification on Operational Technology assets under time constraints.
* Provide technical and system fault analysis, troubleshooting, and resolution in collaboration with customers, subject matter experts, and vendors.
* Develop detailed fault investigations and reports within specified timeframes.
* Maintain and support level crossing monitoring systems, including SCADA and communications backhaul.
* Configure, update, and utilise network monitoring tools for systems and devices.
* Manage firmware and device configurations, ensuring compliance with change management processes.
* Collaborate with stakeholders to make informed hardware and application procurement decisions.
* Review and maintain OT maintenance standards, technical plans, and service schedules

About You
You bring solid knowledge and experience in IT/OT Control System infrastructure and have a proven ability to support internal business customers in a technical services environment, ideally within OT systems. You're a strong communicator and problem-solver who thrives under pressure and takes ownership to deliver results. Your collaborative approach and attention to detail ensure that critical systems remain reliable and secure.

Our ideal candidate will possess the following:

* Fundamental computer forensic skills and a strong technical foundation.
* Experience in IT, networking, and control systems, including SCADA, PLC, and HMI interfacing.
* Knowledge and hands-on experience with:

* Complex networking (LAN, WAN, Layer 2 and 3 devices).

* Remote access technologies (e.g., Terminal Services, VNC, TeamViewer, Netop).
* Virtualisation platforms.
* Serial communication devices and protocols.

* Demonstrated alignment with V/Line's values of responsiveness, integrity, impartiality, accountability, respect, leadership and human rights.

Qualifications

* Tertiary qualification from an accredited institution in a related discipline (typically an Information Technology degree – Telecommunications or Computer Systems).
* A degree in one or more of the following areas is advantageous:

* Computer Science

* Computer Software/Systems Engineering
* Electrical/Electronic Engineering
* Network Security Management
* Industry certifications such as MCSA, CCNA, and VCP are highly regarded.

This is an 8 days on * 6 days off rotated rostered shift role with paid overtime. It is a permanent, full-time opportunity with 5 weeks annual leave, 20% leave loading, superannuation, paid overtime and free myki for metro & regional travel.

This position will be paid in line with the V/Line Rail Operations and Administration Employees Agreement 2023 and is classified as a Clerk C5 position, which is a base salary of $109,414. This is an 8-day on * 6 days off rotated rostered shift role with paid overtime.
