Doctrine Editor – Defence
Clearance Required: Candidates must currently hold a suitable AGSVA Security Clearance to be sponsored by Horsell under our DISP obligations .
Work Arrangement: Canberra, ACT or Remote | Some occasional overnight travel may be required.
Engagement: Minimum 12-month engagement supporting Defence Doctrine activities. Permanent employment is preferred; however, casual or subcontract arrangements may be considered where a commitment to 220 x 8-hour working days per year can be assured.
About the Role: Horsell is seeking experienced Doctrine Editors to support the delivery of Defence doctrine publications and related strategic Defence documentation.
Working within a collaborative team environment, the successful candidates will provide editorial support across a range of Defence publications, ensuring content aligns with Defence writing conventions, formatting requirements and accessibility standards.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide structural and substantive editing, copy-editing and proofreading services across Defence publications
* Collaborate with editors, publication developers and multimedia specialists
* Support publication structure, formatting, English expression and Defence writing conventions
* Assist with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and graphics-related requirements
* Support the development of draft diagrams and publication materials
* Liaise with relevant stakeholders to support publication delivery outcomes
* Maintain accurate documentation and audit trails relating to publication updates and revisions
* Provide advice and support relating to Defence doctrine development
* Contribute to knowledge sharing and continuous improvement activities
Required Qualifications & Experience
* Minimum 3 years' experience as a professional editor
* Experience producing book-length manuscripts aligned to established style guides
* Strong written communication, editing and proofreading capabilities
* Fluency in the Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat
* Strong interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment
* Ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines effectively

This role is based in Canberra, ACT or remote, offering flexibility alongside occasional travel requirements as needed.
