The Tech Council of Australia (TCA) is Australia’s peak industry body for the tech sector. The TCA comprises over 150 members, including Australian-based unicorns, scaleups and global tech companies with an Australian focus. As stewards of the Australian tech sector – Australia’s third-largest industry behind mining and banking – we advise Australian governments, businesses, and the wider community to boost tech investment and improve regulation.
You will be joining a high-calibre team of tech industry veterans, policy and legal minds, and passionate community-builders. You will play an active and public role with our partners and members to help build connections and grow the ecosystem.
Mission of role
Lead the TCA’s policy and advocacy work to ensure the TCA remains the voice for Australian tech Policy. The Head of Policy will spearhead the development and execution of the TCA's policy and advocacy strategies, driving impactful government engagement and public discourse. This includes fostering strong relationships with members and diverse stakeholders, leading a high-performing policy team, and acting as a prominent spokesperson to advance the Australian tech sector's interests and growth.
Key outcomes this role is responsible for
* Leading TCA’s policy development agenda to proactively influence the Government’s tech agenda and secure buy-in for strategies from the Board, members, and internal teams.
* Develop and oversee TCA's policy and advocacy strategy and activities roadmap that represents member needs and proactively influences the Government’s tech agenda, while remaining responsive to emerging issues.
* Develop tech policy positions, collaborating with members to create impactful recommendations, guiding the policy and research team on high-quality analysis and submissions.
* Determining and leading the TCA’s advocacy strategy, including the development and execution of clear, audience-specific advocacy strategies, ensuring timely communication and briefing of stakeholders, and maintaining a forward 12-month plan of policy activities.
* Helping shape TCA’s campaigns, media and communications strategy for political and policy audiences.
* Acting as a prominent public and media spokesperson for the TCA.
* Cultivating and maintaining strong, trusted relationships with key stakeholders, including federal, state, and territory governments, opposition parties, regulators and TCA members.
* Coaching and supporting the TCA’s high-performing policy and advocacy team, and continuously building policy capabilities across the TCA.
* Supporting the TCA’s membership function by engaging with existing and prospective members on the value of policy and advocacy work.
Our ideal candidate will have
* A strong interest in Australia’s technology sector and public policy landscape.
* Demonstrated experience in developing and executing policy and advocacy strategies that influence government agendas and respond to emerging issues, ideally within a peak industry body or similar high-profile organisation.
* Proven ability to secure buy-in for strategic initiatives from boards, members, and internal teams.
* Expertise in developing tech policy positions, collaborating with diverse stakeholders to create impactful recommendations, and guiding teams on high-quality analysis and submissions.
* Exceptional relationship-building and cultivation skills with key stakeholders, including federal, state, and territory governments, opposition parties, regulators, and industry members.
* A track record of acting as a prominent public and media spokesperson, representing organisations at events and conferences.
* Strong leadership in developing and executing agile advocacy strategies, ensuring timely communication and briefing of key stakeholders.

This position is a full-time permanent role, with a six-month probation period based in Canberra, Sydney or Melbourne, with a minimum of three days per week in the office.
