Proven project management skills and experience in environmental management and remediation practices is crucial for assessing legacy mine sites.

The Department of Mining and Energy's Legacy Mines Unit (LMU) administers the Mining Remediation Fund (MRF) which was established to address impacts from legacy mining features across the Territory and migrates environmental and safety risks.

As a
Senior Legacy Mines Remediation Officer
in the LMU team, your primary objective is to provide high-quality, timely and specialist advice for adopting best practice environmental management practices while supporting effective assessment and remediation activities for legacy mine sites throughout the territory.

Currently, the team is focused on the remediation of the Sandy Flat (formerly Redbank) copper mine in the Gulf region of the Northern Territory. The site is considered to be one of Australia's most polluted, based on several significant environmental impacts, primarily due to acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD), which polluted local creeks and impacted important Aboriginal cultural sites.

Your key duties will include, providing scientific advice on the assessment of legacy mines, analysing scientific, engineering and environmental data, and the development and implementation of scopes of work and project management.

Experience in complex problem solving and critical thinking, along with the ability to work effectively and efficiently with minimal supervision, is essential. A Northern Territory manual drivers' licence and willingness to undertake field work in regional and remote areas is also required.
