Role Overview

Make an immediate impact in a fast-paced environment where no two days are ever the same. We're seeking passionate, resilient, and adaptable Registered Nurses to join our acute mental health teams at James Fletcher Hospital and Mater Mental Health Centre in Newcastle.

This is your opportunity to work in high-acuity inpatient units where you'll be part of a multidisciplinary team delivering recovery-focused care to people experiencing severe mental health crises.

Why Choose Acute Mental Health Nursing?

If you're looking for dynamic, high-impact work where you'll be challenged, supported, and constantly learning, acute care is for you. You'll manage complex presentations like psychosis, suicidal ideation, and mania in a secure, team-based environment where clinical decision-making and crisis de-escalation are part of everyday practice.

What to Expect

* A fast-moving, non-regimented environment where priorities shift throughout the day
* Work that is reactionary rather than routine, keeping you thinking on your feet
* A strong focus on teamwork, communication, and clinical skills

What We Offer

* Supernumerary days at the start of employment
* Access to new graduate training days, even if you're not a graduate, if you're new to mental health
* A structured onboarding experience with experienced colleagues
* Ongoing education and career progression opportunities
* Monthly Allocated Days Off (for full-time employees)
* Four weeks of annual leave (pro-rata for part-time employees)
* Paid parental leave (for eligible employees)
* Salary packaging options—up to $11,600 plus novated leasing
* Fitness Passport for health and well-being—discounted gym options for you and your family
* Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for staff and family members

About the Facilities

* James Fletcher Hospital: Located in Newcastle's city fringe, this iconic site offers specialist acute mental health services in a peaceful and historic setting, close to the harbour, parks, and public transport.
* Mater Mental Health Centre: Situated in Waratah, this centre features state-of-the-art inpatient facilities with a focus on trauma-informed, recovery-oriented care, supported by highly experienced clinicians in a modern setting.

Why Live in Newcastle?

Enjoy a relaxed lifestyle in one of Australia's most liveable coastal cities, with beautiful beaches, excellent food, vibrant culture, and easy access to Sydney, the Hunter Valley wine region, and Lake Macquarie.
