Primary objective

To provide specialist neurology care to patients at Royal Darwin Hospital (inpatient and ambulatory), as well as ambulatory

care and neurology advice to regional hospitals and remote communities within the Top End of the Northern Territory.

Context statement

The challenge of this position is to make a real difference to people in Northern Australia. The need is to improve access to

high quality care, broaden the scope and sophistication of neurological services and engage with the unique aspects of the

region: that being a large Aboriginal population, tropical neurology, and remoteness.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Provide care of patients in the Stroke Unit including thrombolysis. Candidates for endovascular clot retrieval are

discussed with the Stroke team at Royal Adelaide Hospital, who also provide TeleStroke services after hours.

2. Provide a consultative neurology service to medical, surgical, psychiatric, OG and Intensive Care patients at Royal Darwin

Hospital.

3. Provide regular general neurology outpatient sessions at Royal Darwin Hospital.

4. Provide specialist outreach to regional hospitals in the Northern Territory.

5. Supervise, direct and evaluate the work of doctors in training.

6. Participate in an after-hours consultancy service to Royal Darwin Hospital.

7. Provide teaching to medical students, interns and registrars in the field of General Neurology.

8. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being

undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.

9. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behaviour.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.

2. Current Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians or eligibility for Fellowship.

3. Experience in assessment and management of neurology patients at a consultant level.

4. Oral and written communication skills.

5. The ability to work in a cross-cultural work environment.

6. The ability to work in a collegiate member of a multi-disciplinary team.

7. An interest in and a commitment to improving Indigenous health.

8. Evidence of commitment to continuing education, teaching and quality assurance activities.

Desirable

1. Neurophysiology training, reporting electroencephalograms and performing Nerve Conduction Study (NCS)/

Electromyography (EMG).
