AEMO at the Heart of Energy

AEMO is Australia’s independent energy system and market operator and system planner. Australian governments are now committed to a net zero economy for Australia by 2050 and our vision is to enable this. We have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to co-design the future of our energy systems, and our core values revolve around character, commitment, and connection. Join us as we contribute to this significant transition in the energy sector.

About The Role

AEMO’s System Design division plays a central role in planning the power system as Australia undergoes rapid transformation. With the shift to renewable generation and widespread electrification, the number of new transmission and distribution projects is growing fast.

With more than 160 GW of new generation set to connect over the next 30 years, this role places you at the centre of Australia’s energy transition. You will help commission a wide range of technologies, from wind, solar and hydro to batteries, storage systems and emerging hydrogen projects.

You’ll work closely with network service providers, developers, investors, manufacturers, consultants, and government and regulatory bodies, collaborating with some of the most respected experts in the industry. As the technical commissioning lead, you will guide renewable projects through commissioning, align new generation with NEM operational requirements, and develop practical solutions to shared system and market challenges. Your work will directly improve the certainty, efficiency and experience of the connections process.

The role offers opportunities to build strong, long‑term relationships across the energy sector, mentor junior engineers, and grow your industry profile through forums, working groups and conferences.

Provide expert technical advice and pragmatic decision‑making across performance standards, power system stability, system strength remediation, registration and commissioning, while mentoring project teams and stakeholders. Support regulatory and market developments that enable efficient integration of large‑scale renewable and storage technologies into the NEM and contribute to a coordinated framework for future connections. Prepare clear, high‑quality communication for technical and non‑technical audiences and proactively enhance AEMO’s reputation as a trusted partner to developers, OEMs, government, NSPs, market participants and customers.

What You Will Bring To The Role

A relevant tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering (or a closely related power systems discipline), supported by a wealth of commissioning experience across renewable generation and transmission/distribution projects. Proven capability in generator commissioning, including hold‑point testing, witnessing, R2 compliance, model validation, and resolving generator and power system performance issues. De monstrated experience leading and delivering small to medium technical projects, applying a pragmatic, service‑oriented and outcome‑focused approach to problem solving. Strong stakeholder and negotiation skills, with the ability to navigate complex technical issues across parties with differing commercial and operational priorities. Well‑developed communication skills, able to translate complex engineering concepts for non‑technical audiences, alongside solid knowledge of the electricity industry, NEM processes, generator behaviour and network constraints.
