The Opportunity

The Aboriginal District Lead (50(d)) provides senior Aboriginal cultural leadership, drives collaborative district decision-making, and builds strategic partnerships in relation to improving outcomes for Aboriginal children in care and families. The role ensures an Aboriginal voice, knowledge, and lived experience are central to decisions relating to care, placement, reunification and connections. Working in partnership with the District Director and Assistant District Director, the Aboriginal District Lead strengthens cultural governance and shared leadership to embed Aboriginal perspectives in district operations, workforce development and practice improvement.

The role contributes to the Department's broader reform agenda and alignment with Closing the Gap and Safe and Supported: The National Framework for Protecting Australia's Children 2021–2031. This work aims to drive measurable outcomes including reduction of Aboriginal children in care and increased reunification, with improvements in cultural planning, ATSICPP compliance, and Aboriginal-led decision-making.

* Improved quality and consistency of cultural planning and stronger family and community connections.
* Enhanced compliance with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child Placement Principle (ATSICPP).
* Provision of an expert cultural lens in decision-making for Aboriginal children in care.
* Greater Aboriginal-led decision-making, community voice, and evidence of self-determination.
* Strengthened Aboriginal workforce capability and leadership across the district.
* Increased cultural competency and cultural humility across the workforce and carer network.

There is currently one fixed-term position available for immediate filling in Joondalup for 12 months with possible extension and/or permanency, and one fixed-term position available in Geraldton for 12 months with possible extension and/or permanency.

Suitable applicants will be placed in a pool from which appointments will be made for this or similar future vacancies (fixed term or permanent) that arise within the next 12 months across the Department of Communities.
