About the role
We are seeking candidates to join the Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia Limited (ALSWA) as a Criminal Lawyer in our office located in South Hedland.
This position requires a person with a demonstrated ability to appear as an advocate in criminal courts and a passion for providing high-quality legal assistance to Aboriginal people.
Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture, society and the issues affecting Aboriginal people is required.
Responsibilities
Appearing as counsel in the Magistrates and Children's Courts on a daily basis.
Scope to appear as counsel in District and Supreme Courts.
Regular travel to circuit courts and weekend court appearances on a rostered basis.
Qualifications
Ability to appear as counsel in criminal proceedings.
Understanding of criminal law, rules of evidence and criminal practice and procedure.
Sound knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture, society and the issues affecting Aboriginal people.
Demonstrated high level organisational, communication and time-management skills with the ability to work under pressure.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a willingness to learn and share knowledge.
Ability to work in a sensitive manner with clients.
Ability to travel when required.
Ability to work on weekends and public holidays when required.
Must hold a current WA Practising Certificate.
Benefits
Fixed-term contract (to 30 June ****).
Salary commensurate with experience: \$82,858 to \$140,927 pa (restricted practice lawyer range £97,348 to \$78,850) plus superannuation.

ALSWA is a not-for-profit, independent, government-funded organisation working to provide high-quality legal representation, support and assistance to the Aboriginal community in WA.
We have 11 offices across regional WA and provide legal assistance in criminal, civil, human rights and family law. ALSWA engages in law and policy reform, community legal education activities and offers services that support clients in areas such as youth diversion, bail support, unpaid fines and the Custody Notification Service.
