Position Overview
Environmental Project Officer (ID: 26141420) provides agency assistance in project management for the investigation, evaluation, and cleanup of uncontrolled hazardous substance sites in Montana under CERCLA. The officer works closely with state and federal counterparts to ensure protection of Montana's environment through the application and knowledge of environmental laws and regulations.
Responsibilities
* Plan, coordinate, and direct interdisciplinary technical studies and evaluate project alternatives relative to applicable environmental laws.
* Review all project and technical documents to ensure regulatory compliance and aid in the selection of technically appropriate, cost‐effective remedies.
* Oversee operations and maintenance programs for selected sites, act as liaison to the public, and coordinate with various stakeholders.
Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree in physical, biological, environmental, or earth science or engineering.
* Two years of experience in natural resource processes, remediation, mine waste reclamation, or other related hazardous substance investigation and cleanup.
* Preferred experience in customer service, construction oversight, public speaking, project management, procurement, contracting, and program field experience.
* Current valid driver's license and clean driving record in accordance with State of Montana Vehicle Use Policy.
* Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training required upon hire. Medical Surveillance Program enrollment recommended.
* Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered on a case‐by‐case basis.
Benefits & Compensation
Salary: $58,760.00 – $78,000.00 per year.
Schedule: Full‐time, Day Job. Shift: 8‐hour day shift.
Telework: Eligible for telework; full‐time telework not available; schedule must be supervisor approved.

Additional Information
Effective July 1st, 2026, all employees will receive a $1 per hour increase or an increase of 2.5%, whichever is greater.
