About This Opportunity

We are seeking a passionate and highly motivated Primary Care Clinician (Avian, Exotics & Wildlife) to join our dynamic Primary Care team and contribute to the advancement of the veterinary profession through clinical teaching at the UQ Vets Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

Reporting to the Primary Care Service Lead, this position is based at the UQ Vets Small Animal Hospital on the Gatton campus. The successful candidate will deliver high-quality, relationship-centred veterinary care to avian, exotic, and wildlife patients, while also supporting routine and emergency care for canine and feline patients as part of the broader Primary Care Service.

In addition to delivering excellence in clinical care, the role involves active participation in the clinical teaching and supervision of undergraduate veterinary science and veterinary technology students, along with the training and mentoring of interns and junior clinicians.

Key responsibilities will include:

o Clinical Care and Leadership – Deliver high-quality, relationship-centred care to avian, exotic, wildlife (as required), and small animal patients; independently manage complex cases and provide mentoring and clinical leadership to junior staff.

o Teaching and Supervision – Actively participate in the clinical training of undergraduate and postgraduate students, interns, and residents, while continuing to develop teaching capability.

o Professional and Community Engagement – Promote and strengthen the School’s relationships with industry, government, professional bodies, and the broader community, and engage in continuing education for professional development.

o Service Improvement – Identify and contribute to initiatives that enhance clinical service delivery and support the continuous improvement of hospital operations.

o Operational and Business Support – Assist in daily clinical service operations, uphold sound business management practices, and carry out other duties as directed by senior leadership.

About You

o A Bachelor of Veterinary Science or equivalent, registrable in Queensland

o Relevant experience of four or more years in a general or specialist practice with a focus on avian and exotic patients and/or Award of membership of ANZCVS in an area relevant to avian, exotic and wildlife care

o Demonstrated relationship-centred approach to veterinary care, with a commitment to developing genuine partnerships with the entire healthcare team, including the client

o Demonstrated accountability and a proactive attitude with the enthusiasm and drive to identify and contribute to improvements within the Small Animal Hospital

o Commitment and enthusiasm for the education of Veterinary Science and Veterinary Technology students

o Capacity to serve as an excellent clinical veterinary role model

o An understanding and knowledge of relevant legislative and professional requirements relating to veterinary practice in QLD and to veterinary health and safety requirements

o Ability to establish effective professional relationships and to represent the School of Veterinary Science to the university and wider community, including industry, government and professional bodies

o Demonstrated effective interpersonal, teamwork, negotiation and consultation skills and formal written and oral communication skills


Vaccinations and Immunisation

It is a condition of employment for this role that if you are required now or in the future, to work or interact in Queensland Health clinical facility; or in an equivalent clinical health facility; or health care role; or will be required to perform work tasks that put you at risk of exposure to vaccine-preventable disease you are required to be immunised against, and remain immunised against, certain vaccine preventable diseases (VPDs) in accordance with the University’s Vaccinations and Immunisation Guidelines (PPL 2.60.08). The employee is required to provide evidence of immunisation against VPDs

The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including: right to work in Australia, education check, mandatory immunisations.
